Remembering Tip
Tip Smith, whose secret identity was John Everett Jules Smith passed away on Friday, February 14th, 2025 in Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche, NS.
He was born December 18th, 1929 in Shinimacas Bridge, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. The site of a water powered grist mill and farm.
He is predeceased by his parents, John E. Smith and Minnie (Canning) Smith; wife, Pauline (Conley) Smith; daughter, Lisa Joanne, Vancouver, BC; brothers, Ottis, Carmen, Foreman and sister, Effa. Survived by his children; Brad (Keltie), Tatamagouche, and Corey (Gayle), Waverley; grandchildren, Matthew, Ellen, Daniel and Emmet. He was a dog lover all his life – his favourite dog; Snoop, a black lab mix.
In the 1950’s, he set out to make his mark on the world by going to Truro to work as a bookkeeper where he met Pauline, his wife of 64 years. They married in Truro in 1956.
In the early 60’s they moved from the house they built on MacLean Street, Truro to Tatamagouche to start Smith’s Farm Equipment, a Massey Ferguson dealership, offering sales and service of tractors, implements, lawn equipment and snowmobiles. He also cleared snow from many driveways with a tractor and snowblower and offered backhoe services.
He and Pauline made Tatamagouche their home and engaged in many community organizations; the church, square dancing, the Lions Club, twice president of the North Shore Recreation Centre, the Fire Department, the Willow Lodge and he was a founding member of the North Shore Snowmobile Club. They built their dream cottage on Brule Point. His last residence was the Willow Lodge, home of the best nursing care anywhere. Many thanks go out to everyone at the Willow Lodge for their care and compassion and his doctor and friend, Dr. Dan MacDonald.
As well his family would like to thank the ladies who made his life more enjoyable by taking him for many drives especially to the Country Bread Basket. He thought the world of you and you know who you are.
His knowledge of the backroads and the farmers on the North Shore was remarkable. He knew so many of the farmers and had a great respect for them and the work they did. He had a vast knowledge of farm machinery and a willingness to help out by sharing this knowledge.
He will be dearly missed and we will be fondly remembered his many stories and sayings.
His body as per his wishes, has been donated to Medical Science, where maybe they can determine how a man can smoke cigarettes for more than 70 years and not have cancer.
A visitation will take place in Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche on Tuesday, February 25th from 6 PM to 8 PM.
