Thomas Michael Stevens
January 2, 1958 – February 14, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Thomas “Tom” Stevens, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a great-grandfather, who touched the lives of all who knew him.
Tom Stevens’ journey began on a winter’s day, January 2, 1958, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, to his loving parents, Roddie and Mary Catherine Stevens. He was raised and lived in Eskasoni First Nation, the land and community he cherished deeply, where his spirit took root and flourished.
As a proud Mi’kmaw crafter and artisan, Tom found beauty in the world around him. Whether strumming his guitar, weaving melodies into song, or gathering natural materials for his next creation, his hands were always busy bringing art to life. His deep love for the Mi’kmaw language and the warmth of storytelling over pitewey made every moment spent with him a gift. Those who had the privilege of learning from him will forever cherish his wisdom, laughter, and the gentle way he shared his knowledge.
For 34 years, Tom faithfully drove the school bus for the Eskasoni School Board, not just as a job, but a role he cherished. His dedication to his community extended far beyond the road. For 26 years, he opened his home as a foster parent and served several terms on the board of directors for the Federation of Foster Parents. In addition, Tom enjoyed going to Maine with his family, harvesting blueberries and was a skilled carpenter whose craftsmanship could be seen in everything he created.
He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 43 years, Kathleen Stevens; children, Amber (Theodore), George (Katrina), Thomas (Jolita), Semisel (Nik), Keeshia, Latisha and special daughter, Katilaya, as well as his 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, his siblings, the late Murdena (Albert), Bridget Ann, Annie Catherine (Mikalo), Mary Ellen (Francis), Roderick, Veronica, Martha (Kennis) and Calvin, as well as his many nieces and nephews.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, Roddie and Mary Catherine Stevens; sister, Murdena Marshall; nieces, Elizabeth Marshall, Denise Marshall and Cassandra Stevens; and his nephew, Tommy Marshall.
Visitation will take place at the Elder Centre on Saturday, March 1st starting at 7 pm. until Monday, March 3rd at 10 am. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Parish Church on Monday, March 3rd at 10:30 am with Fr. Antolin Asor officiating.
