CWO Thomas Daniel « Tom » Mombourquette, MMM, CD
(Retired) – 83, Truro. It is with great sadness that we
announce the passing of a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle,
brother-in-law, cousin and friend to many. Born in Sydney, Cape
Breton, he was a son of the late Thomas and Florence (MacInnis)
Mombourquette.
He grew up surrounded by his siblings, Marilyn (deceased),
Arnold, Peter, Lorraine (deceased), Raymond, Elaine, Lorna, Joseph
(deceased), and Douglas. Despite the many travels and adventures
during his military service, Tom’s fondest memories and
frequently told stories were of his childhood adventures with his
siblings and friends in the Shipyard.
Tom was predeceased by his wife Betty (Marrison). Together,
they had two sons, Tommy (married to Tracey MacPherson) and Danny
(married to Lydia Rafuse). He was further blessed with three
grandchildren, Lauren, Jack and Claire whom he loved
dearly.
A proud member of the Canadian Forces for 34 years, Tom
served in the Canadian Army (Reserve Force) from 1956-1957, Royal
Canadian Regiment (RCR) 2nd Battalion
1958-1964, and Canadian Armed Forces 1969-1996. With far too many
adventures to list a select few that he was most proud of were: the
completion of his Basic Airborne serial course in 1962; a member of
the 2 RCR group winner of the Duke of Edinburgh trophy while stationed
at the Wolseley Barracks (1962) in the United Kingdom; a competition
against every military in the commonwealth, and the first time this
award was won by a unit outside of the United Kingdom; and finally,
his appointment to the Order of Military Merit in 1987.
In addition to his military achievements, Tom was also a
50-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion and received recognition
for this in 2024. He worked as an Assisting Officer and helped many
veterans and their families receive the benefits and support they
needed. He was also an extremely dedicated legion volunteer,
especially during Poppy fundraising activities and at local
Remembrance Day ceremonies, until this past year when he was
physically unable to attend.
An avid outdoorsman, Tom loved to hunt and fish with his
friends and sons and spent countless hours searching for the next
giant sea bass, buck, trout or school of mackerel – often
telling (sometimes tall) stories about when he found
them.
The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to
Tom’s dear friend, Juanita Johnson, who was always there for
him and visited him devotedly while he was in the
hospital.
As per Tom’s wishes there will be no visitation or
service and interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, Tom, a lifelong supporter of Canadian Blood Services (CBS)
and a recipient of the 50-donation certificate, would approve of any
blood donations or support you may wish to offer to CBS in his
memory.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
