Passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side on February 4th, 2025. Predeceased by his parents Florence (nee Smith) and James Watson and sister Caroline Lester. Survived by his loving wife, Jean, daughter Katherine (Steve), son James, granddaughter Bailey (Dylan), great grandchildren, Kaiya and Carter, stepdaughter Karen (Tim), stepson Eric (Lore) and extended family. Tom had many friends, some dating back to public school, whose company he deeply valued.
Born and raised in Toronto, Tom was active in Scouting and North Toronto Collegiate’s inaugural instrumental music program. He graduated from Queen’s University in1957 where he earned his commission in the Royal Canadian Navy. His service fostered a lifelong love of the sea which he nurtured as both a boater and passenger with Jean on freighters and cruise ships.
Tom’s career, primarily in HR management, included 30 years with Xerox Corporation in Canada, the US and UK where he built important friendships that lasted into his retirement. As a retiree, Tom directed the energy he had dedicated to his work into the relationships and pursuits that meant the most to him.
One of his many adventures was his move with Jean to Costa Rica where they enjoyed 5 years in the expat community along with travel and volunteer work. Following their return to Toronto in 2003, Tom worked as a Management Consultant and volunteered with Management Advisory Service (MAS) until 2012.
Tom pursued several hobbies and interests during his lifetime including playing the guitar, model railroading and enjoying music, especially folk and jazz and even a futile effort to learn to play his beloved bagpipes. He took great pleasure in the many dinner parties and special celebrations he and Jean hosted and attended over the years, engaging in lively conversation and debate on many subjects. He was always interested in the thoughts and opinions of others, and eager to offer help and advice to those who needed him.
Tom will be fondly remembered and very much missed by all those who cared for him.
