Theodore (Ted) Ulmer Obituary
He was born on May 5, 1946, to Reverend Frederick and Helen Ulmer in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Ted was raised in the parsonage with his sister Marjorie and brother David, beside Emmaus Lutheran Church in Brightview, where his father served as pastor. His father also served at Zion Lutheran Church at Peace Hills.
Ted was baptized into the family of Christ on May 19, 1946, at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Brightview, AB, and was confirmed on April 30, 1961. His confirmation verse was: “All things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” — Matthew 21:22
Ted had fond memories of school and rural life in Brightview. He attended high school and college at Concordia in Edmonton, where he met his future wife, Shallea. Ted pursued studies at Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with the intention of becoming a pastor.
After the passing of his father, Ted left Seminary and returned home to Penticton, BC to care for his mother.
Ted and Shallea were married on May 18, 1968, at St. James Lutheran Church in Carlyle, Saskatchewan. They began their life together in Edmonton, AB, where Ted worked as an accountant for a hardware company.
In the late 1960s, Ted and Shallea moved to Vancouver, BC, where they started their family. They welcomed their first son, Timothy Scott, in 1969, followed by Michael Paul in 1971, and Todd Alan in 1974. The family spent the early years in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, where Ted worked for CP Air before starting a printing business with his brother-in-law, Ernie Temple.
In 1978, Ted was offered a position with the Lutheran Laymen’s League (LLL). He and Shallea felt called by God and moved their family across the country to Kitchener, ON. Ted found great joy in his work with the LLL and eventually became Director of the Canadian LLL.
In the mid-1980s, Ted was asked to lead the initiative to establish an autonomous Lutheran church body in Canada. Through his efforts, Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) was formed. Soon after, Ted and Shallea once again relocated, this time to Edmonton, AB, where Ted took on the role of Executive Assistant, District Services for the Alberta–British Columbia District of LCC.
Ted concluded his career in Calgary, AB, serving as the Director of Fund Development for EnCharis Seniors’ Housing.
Ted had a deep passion for and love of Jesus Christ. He was a devoted leader in the local churches where he lived and throughout the broader church community. He instilled strong Christian values in his home and encouraged a vibrant faith in raising his family. Ted lived out his faith through service to his community and fellow man. He was compassionate, empathetic, and radiated genuine joy.
He lived a life of gratitude for the blessings he received. Ted passed on his love of the outdoors and the beauty of creation to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed physical activity and friendly competition through sports and games.
Ted demonstrated the importance of hard work and integrity. He believed in solving problems independently—especially when it came to home and auto repairs—a trait he passed on to the next generations.
Ted was deeply loved and widely respected. He was compassionate, strong, loving, and wise. His life touched many, and he will be profoundly and joyfully missed.
Ted is predeceased by his father Frederick, mother Helen, brother David, brother-in law Ernie, and sister-in-law Edie.
He is survived by his beloved wife Shallea; sons Timothy (Lisa), Michael (Sandi), and Todd (Kelly); grandchildren Joshua (Rebecca), Daniel (Gloria), Kyle (Ariel), Andrew (Heather), Hannah (Joshua), Samuel, Benjamin, Bethany, Heather, Justin, Lily-ann, and Gavin; great-grandchildren Ariella, Ava, Easton, Adeline, Sophie, Freya, Mylah, Revan and Chloe; and sister Marjorie.
A Funeral Service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church (3610 Sarcee Road SW) on Friday, May 9, 2025 at 1:00pm with a reception to follow in the parish hall.
