Obituary of Thelma MacDonald
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Thelma MacDonald of Watervale at the age of 85. She passed peacefully surrounded by her family at the Aberdeen Hospital Friday, March 7th. She was born August 30, 1939 to Edith and Jim Palethorpe at the home of her grandparents in Salmon River.
She spent her early years in Truro attending Normal College in her teens. It was during these years that she met her husband, Bert MacDonald and were married in 1963. Once graduated, she worked at the Children’s Training Centre in Bible Hill. It was here that she met our foster sister, Helen, who mom and dad raised until she was 16. Mom and dad went on to have 3 children of their own and she decided then that she would go back to school and become a teacher. She attended the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College, graduating in 1975. She began her teaching career in Westville at Chelsea school, the Church Street School, retiring at age 55 from Walter Duggan Consolidated.
Mom’s early years were her most adventurous. She loved to drive and could be found speeding around the track in a stock car, cruising on a motorcycle or racing through the woods on snowmobile trails. She was the first female hockey coach in the area. Her daughter wanted to play hockey but there was no coach so she made it happen. She loved making ceramics and shared this love with many, offering classes in her home to friends, family and anyone who wanted to learn.
She spent her summers packing us up and heading to the family cottage on Shortt’s Lake. After that, she and dad took up camping at D and B campground every summer. Once mom retired, the cottage at Lakecrest Drive was built and many a summer was enjoyed there, dipping her feet in the water, relaxing and reading endless books.
She will be sadly missed by children, Jeannie Fraser, Jamie MacDonald (Kelley), Sarah MacDonald; brother, Walter Palethorpe; sister in-laws, Elizabet MacLean, Phyllis Jaques (Terrance); cousin, Aileen Wright; grandchildren, Kyle Fraser (Danielle), Carrie Fraser, Rebecca Schriver (Isaiah), Jordan MacLeod (James), Rachel MacDonald (Hunter), Ben MacDonald, Emily Haines; great grandchildren, Noah and Wyatt McCabe, Amaya Shriver, Ethan Fraser, Ruby MacLeod. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bert MacDonald; parents Jim and Edith Palethorpe; grandson, James Haines; and many sister and brother in-laws.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, March 11 from 5-7pm at Eagles Funeral home, Westville. Funeral service will be Wednesday, March 12 at 2pm at St. Luke’s United Church, Salt Springs. Burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Salt Springs. Reception will be held following the funeral at the St. Luke’s Church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local SPCA.
