Obituary of Suzanne Marie Beck
Suzanne Marie Beck (nee Curran) – Age 78, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on Wednesday September 17, 2025, at the Halifax Infirmary.
Sue was born on September 15, 1947 in Gambo, Newfoundland to the late Joseph and Kathleen (Cashin) Curran. A proud Newfoundlander, she loved sharing stories of her happy life growing up in Gambo and the fun times she shared with family and friends: dodging curfew, playing with cousins at the hotel and playing house in her aunt’s grand attic, dressing up for dances at the parish hall, and so many other good memories.
While teaching in Whitbourne, NFLD, she met a young RCMP officer she’d affectionately come to call HazieBoo for decades to come. Sue and Hazen were married in Grand Falls. They built a life together in a number of places in Newfoundland, Ontario and Nova Scotia with their two daughters and the good friends they made along the way, before retiring and moving to Bridgewater. Upon the death of her HazieBoo, Sue moved to Halifax to be closer to her daughters and grandchildren.
Sue loved to laugh – often at herself and her attempts to knit or drive a manual car – and enjoyed playing cards and doing word searches. Despite her almost legendary fear of creepy-crawlies, she loved her time at Gambo Pond in her youth, had many camping adventures and nights at the camp with Hazen, her two girls and friends. Sue then continued the camping tradition at Rissers Beach and Kejimkujik with her beloved grandkids.
In recent years, Sue faced many health challenges, proving herself to be a feisty and determined fighter who defied medical expectations. Her cherished visits with dear friends, neighbours and family – who came from near and far – and a daily dose or two of orange pineapple ice-cream helped to keep her going.
Sue will be deeply missed by her daughters, Tracy (Darren) Adamson, Fall River, and Charmaine (Richard) Dymond, Halifax, and her grandchildren Alex, Julie, Eric, Tyler and Sammy. She will also be remembered by her brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Hazen; son, Donald Joseph; parents Joseph and Kathleen; and siblings, Joseph, John, Mary, David, and Edward.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to her neighbours at 55 Citation Drive, especially Jean, for their support and friendship over the past few years.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home by request. Service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, September 25, 2025, in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater, with Father Keith Billard officiating. Reception will immediately follow the service in the funeral home. Interment will conclude in Newcombville Cemetery, Newcombville. Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Newcombville Cemetery and Open Harbour Refugee Association (hello@openharbour.ca).
