Stephanie Pictou, 60, of
Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation began her journey to the spirit
world with her family guiding her on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at the QE2
in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born a triplet on June 23rd, 1964 in Boston,
Massachusetts to Mary Imelda(Hubba) Lafford and Peter
Ostoposides.
The Creator
graced us with her presence, and she had many titles; Sis, Effanie,
Auntie, Godmom but most importantly, « Mom and Big Gram. » Our
beloved, « Big Gram » made her journey and the heart of her
family went with her. She was the kind of person who would drop
everything at the moment’s notice to help someone she loved.
Always giving, always thoughtful- she was the ultimate gift giver.
Every holiday, the kids would light up opening the special gift bags
she made just for them, filled with handpicked treasures and so much
love. She never missed a birthday – always made sure
everyone felt incredibly special on their day. She showed up for every
milestone, every game, every competition- front row, cheering the
loudest and beaming with pride. Her grandbabies were her everything,
and her son, her whole heart. She talked about them constantly, so
proud of each and every one.
She took such
beautiful care of her mom, Hubba – patient, loving, and devoted. The
bond they shared was strong, and the way she looked after her mom was
a reflection of the depth of her own heart. She was very family
oriented and would be at every gathering assisting in any way
possible, no dirty dishes were ever left
behind.
Prior to
making Paqtnkek her forever home, she lived in Boston with her mom
along with her triplet sisters, Shar and Star, and with her aunt Annie
Mae and special sisters Denise and Debra. She lived in Halifax to
further her education attending St. Mary’s University, and
Kjipuktuk College. She always loved children and gained a diploma in
Early Childhood which allowed her to work at the Mi’kmaw
Friendship Centre for many years. She gained life-long friendships
during her time there and would often be seen hanging with Lynn, Dawn
and Ducy. During her life, she achieved many accomplishments to allow
her to be devoted and valuable. She was the manager of the
Entertainment Centre at home for many years. She loved her job, the
staff and most importantly, the patrons in which she gained their
heartfelt friendships. She loved them like her own family. After work,
she would go to her son’s house to do the dishes like it was
her mission – always 70’s soul music playing in
the background and the paper towel in her
bra.
She was
predeceased by her brothers, Roger and James Pictou. Her aunts, Anne
Mae Pictou/Aquash, Mary Rebecca (Becky) Julian, Lavinia Brooks and
Wanda Brooks, and Uncle Frank Sappier. Maternal grandparents, Mary
Ellen Barlow and Wilfred Brooks.
Besides her
mother, Mary Imelda (Hubba) Lafford, she is survived by her son,
Nicholas (Ashley), sisters, Sharlene (Dennis), Starlene (Billy), and
Angela. Her grandchildren; Tyler, Charisma, Nakhil and Shiloh. Her
godchild; Denise Googoo. Nephews; Warren (Leanne), Jason (Shayla)
Adrian (Amanda), and Misal. Nieces: Chastity, Jaya (Martin) and Megan
(Dillan) and special sisters, Denise and Debra. Her aunts, Linda
Julian and Diana Brooks and her Besties; Lynn Hamood, Dawn Carvery,
Dorothy Isadore, Nancy Bernard, Gladys Pigeon, Rosie
Sylliboy, and Ducy and Freda Paul.
She will be
brought home to Paqtnkek at her sister, Angela Lafford’s
home, 15 Glidow Lane on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 6:30PM for
visitation and the funeral mass will be on Monday, June 9th at 11AM at
Immaculate Conception Church in Heatherton, NS. |Reverend Donald
MacGillivray presiding. There will be a feast and salite to
celebrate her life at the Paqtnkek Community Centre. Burial will be at
a later date.
We, the family
would like to thank Paqtnkek Chief and Council, QE2 ICU unit, all the
doctors and nurses who were there for her during her time, Caper
Construction and all the people who were there for us especially Lynn.
We will be forever grateful.
Wela’lioq.
