Sr. Helen Moreski, Fille de la Providence (FDLP), born March 15, 1934, passed away in the early morning hours of January 30, 2025, at Stensrud Lodge, Saskatoon. Helen leaves to mourn her Saskatchewan religious community (Nellie, Adeline, Angeline, Marie, Rita, Dolores, Eveline, Emma, and Celine) along with FDLP members internationally. She leaves to mourn her family of sister-in law Josie (Mike Mareski), nieces Marian Aubin, Angie Smith, Della Love, and their families along with many other nieces and nephews. Sr. Helen was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Mary, and her siblings Frank, Annie (Ronald) Drake, Sophie (Seth) Hettrick, Katie (Arthur) Drake, Helen (Steve) Burlock, Andrew (Helen), Peter, John, Mike and Lawrence. Both her parents were born in Poland, and she valued her Polish roots, learning French when she joined the FDLP.
Sr. Helen spent her life as a teacher in one capacity or another. She faithfully served her God and community in the FDLP missions of Saskatoon, Domremy, St. Brieux, Vonda, St. Front, Vegreville, St. Denis, St. Louis, Labrador, and with the FDLP community in England with whom she celebrated her silver jubilee. She embraced her call to teach and served her students with dedication and care.
In her early years Helen loved to visit her family at the farm and appreciated her connections with family. When she retired in Prince Albert, she enjoyed the company of her Chihuahua Tiny. She left Tiny and friends behind when she needed more support and moved into Trinity Manor in Saskatoon. She was often found at Trinity by the chapel windows, sometimes gazing off into the world and sometimes just enjoying a nap in the sun. Many at Trinity still remember her saying « hi young man…hi young lady… » when they would stop to speak with her, helping many to feel young again!
In her final months at Stensrud Lodge Helen grew to accept her lack of mobility and the perimeters her health placed on her. The staff there always spoke a kind word about her and did their very best to ensure she was comfortable. They would bring her to the common area where she loved to watch the activities happening be it holding part of the quilt being made or watching the floor curling game. Her final afternoon included a visit from Sr. Rita, who described her as happy and doing well. Thank you, Stensrud Lodge, for including Sr. Helen in your family and for your faithful care.
Helen will be interred in the FDLP plot at the Prud’homme cemetery when the soil is warm and the skies are clear. Rest in peace Sr. Helen, you have been a faithful servant and God is welcoming you home! In lieu of flowers, those choosing to make donations in her honour may consider a charity that supports abandoned dogs or the recreational activities at Stensrud.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:00 pm on Friday, February 7, 2025, at the Queen of Peace Chapel in the Cathedral of the Holy Family, 123 Nelson Road, Saskatoon.
