It is with profound sadness that the family of « Sonnie » Everett William Cuming announce his passing at St Lawrence Lodge on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
Sonnie is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Marilynne; his three daughters Heather Cameron, Jennifer Longtin (Gary) and Stephanie Lemieux (Mike) and his grandchildren, Connor, Kaelan (Keanna), Kathleen (Jared); Holden (Charlotte), Émilie, Maxine (Mitch), Sophie (Danny); and Kaleigh. He was predeceased by his mother Kathleen Mullens and her husband Jack, his father William Cuming, sister Eyvette Canning and her husband Norman, and his brother-in-law Howard Ferguson. Sonnie will be fondly remembered by his brother-in-law, Robert Holden and wife Jeannie, and sister-in-law, Janice Ferguson as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and his long time best pal, Ritchie Whiteland.
A passionate athlete from a young age, he played hockey on numerous local teams followed by coaching and refereeing in the BMHA. He was also proud to have been the ‘stickboy’ for the Brockville Magedomas and the Brockville Chiefs hockey teams. As he got older he continued to be involved in the hockey community acting as a fundraiser for the Brockville Braves and Brockville Tikis hockey clubs. He was a life-long Detroit Red Wings and Gordie Howe fan.
When his daughters were older and they had their own activities, Sonnie would volunteer his time sitting on the executive of the Brockville Gymny Krickets Gymnastics Club and The Upper Canada Swim Club and coached for the Brockville Girls Minor Softball.
When the grandchildren arrived he could be found in the pool teaching them how to swim and in the fall/winter be found at the rinks watching them play hockey or watching their football games.
Sonnie found joy in seeing his friends on the annual trip to Myrtle Beach and on his many travels with Marilynne over the years including a few special trips to the east coast. He will be remembered as a hard working man who spent his entire career at the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital and was always willing to help out friends, neighbours and his community. In his retirement he enjoyed spending time washing his car as well as those of his friends and the vehicles at Irvine Funeral Home. Sonnie loved nothing more than sharing a beer with friends and family and he’d love to know you raised one in his honor.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at St Lawrence Lodge and the BGH Stroke & Rehab Unit for the care and compassion given during Sonnie’s time there.
A celebration of Sonnie’s life will be held at the Irvine Memorial Chapel at Roselawn, 2451 County Road 15, Maitland, on Thursday, February 27th, 2025 from 1 – 3 pm. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Ontario SPCA Leeds Grenville Animal Centre or to Parkinson Canada will be gratefully acknowledged.
Send a message of condolence or share a special thought of Sonnie on the memorial wall above.
