Jean « Shirley » (Calder) Cotie
June 28, 1937 – February 5, 2025
St. Peter’s, NS
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston at the age of 87.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Albert Alphonse “Phonse” Cotie; children, David Cotie (Mary), and Andrea Cotie-Melnyk (Peter); grandchildren, Dennis (Rebecca) Delorey, Tanya Cotie (Rocky), Shauna Cotie, Kirsten Melnyk (Trevor), Connor Melnyk (Kenzie) and Alyssa Melnyk; great-grandchildren, Logan and Hannah Fitzpatrick, Arichat; Brian, Duke, John Robert and Lloyd Delorey, New Glasgow; and Macklin Melnyk-Scott, Tantallon. Survived by siblings, John Calder (Annie – deceased), Bobby Calder (Charlotte), Sally Latimer (Billy – deceased), Betty Touesnard (Martin). Sisters-in-law Phyllis Cote (Wally – deceased), Mary Dunlop (Larry), brother-in-law Danny Cote (Linda).
She was predeceased by her parents, James Calder and Philomena (Fougere) Calder; her brothers, Clarence and James “Jimmy” Calder; sister-in-law, Kay Britten (Raymond); brother-in-law, Jerry Cote (Katherine) and her son, Philip Cotie.
Mom grew up in St. Peter’s and spent 35 years with the Royal Bank. Her roots in her community ran deep. She was a longtime member of both the Bonnie Brae Seniors Club and the MacAdian Ceilidh Dance group.
In addition to a full-time job and mother of three, she could always be found doing things for others and had a great love for animals. Many of the family pets over the years were ones she rescued. She also was blessed with a green thumb and was known to “rescue” plants from the grocery store.
Mom filled her life with many hobbies and interests and was always up for anything. An avid downhill and cross-country skier, a master sledder, Christmas tree picker, skater, crafter, fishing master, hilarious Pictionary player, deer whisperer, shopper, present giver and baker.
The family would like to thank all those who helped out as Mom’s health declined. A special thank you to Penny who did so much to support both Mom and Dad.
There will be a celebration of life held this summer where friends and family can gather to share stories about the impact she has left on this world. Donations in her memory can be made to your favorite animal rescue organization. Arrangements are under the care of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, St. Peter’s. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
