Obituary of Shirley Rita Marie Romo
Shirley Romo, avid bargain hunter, lover of children, faithful newspaper reader and a fanatic walker, passed away peacefully on March 3, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side, at the age of 90.
She was the daughter of Joseph and Eva Mae (Davis) Byrne, growing up in the Hub, Glace Bay. In a company house overlooking the ocean with 8 siblings, she was the epitome of the “waste not want not” generation. Shirley married Ronald (Toose) Romo on June 21st 1954 and they built their home on Hickman Street where they raised their two children, Debbie and Blaine, amongst friendly and caring neighbours.
Shirley was quite healthy up until the last few weeks of her life, where we think, being a devout Catholic, she felt the time crunch to make it to heaven before the ill Pope’s arrival. It was her dedication to her physical fitness that kept Shirley independent and healthy for 90 years. Whether it was partner skating with Toose at the Glace Bay Miners Forum, pounding the pavement (or shopping centres) in her New Balance shoes, sweating with the ladies at Curves, or racking up strikes with her bowling team, she preferred moving to sitting.
Shirley was a notably kind and generous person, always helping others and being a strong voice for people who needed it. She loved all children – from a large extended family, the kids around the neighborhood, those on her school bus, and the children with special needs she worked with in the classroom and later working with clients while managing Brass Tacks Industries. But it was the love for one child in particular that went unmatched, her granddaughter Amy. It was hard to say whose smile was bigger when they were together.
After the passing of her husband, Shirley made the big move to Auburndale in December 2010, to be closer to her family. We knew not to disturb Shirley from 7:30-8:30pm when she would be comfortably in her chair catching up with her favorite characters on Coronation Street, and playing along with Jeopardy. In her younger years you could often find Shirley knitting up a storm, and in her later years she would spend those long winter months at her kitchen table mastering puzzles.
She is now reunited with her husband, Toose, of 51 years. Along with her husband and parents, Shirley is predeceased by her sisters Dawn Wadden, Mae Toomey, Helen Croney; brothers Gerald, Michael and Allister. She is survived by her son Blaine, daughter Debbie (Byron) Oickle, granddaughter Amy (Nathan Bridges), sister Carol Byrne, brother Leo, sister-in-law June Byrne, special niece Belinda Wilcox and many loved nieces and nephews.
We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the staff of the emergency department at South Shore Regional Hospital for all they did to make Shirley comfortable, and to Dr. James Livingstone for taking such good care of Shirley over the years.
A memorial service will take place in Glace Bay at a later date in April. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you honour Shirley’s kind and generous nature by doing something nice and unexpected for someone else.
