Shirley Pace
1928-2025
Shirley May Pace, age 96, of Yarmouth Heights died March 8,
2025 in Yarmouth.
Shirley was born to Floyd A. Flower of Bethel, VT and Marion
(Sooley) Flower of Heart’s Content NL on November 3,
1928. She was raised in New England. She had one brother,
Robert Flower who died in 2022. Shirley’s grandmother was
Georgie Goodwin of Lower Argyle, NS. With Canadian blood in her veins,
Shirley genuinely fell in love with the area when she first visited in
the late 1930’s and over the years, this deep and abiding
love grew into a dream of someday living in Argyle.
In 1953, Shirley married Ralph E. Pace of Saugus,
Massachusetts and they were married for 58 years until
Ralph’s passing in 2011.
With a career as an administrative assistant, Shirley spent a
large portion of her life working in settings that involved
children. She loved children and animals and they loved
her. Shirley worked at a church camp for kids of RI, in the
local school library, drove a school bus and was employed at Brown and
Hopkins Country store where she was affectionally called the
‘penny candy lady’ by the local kids.
She led church youth groups, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and read
to the blind, (later becoming blind herself) and she maintained
treasured relationships with many of the folks she met throughout her
life.
Shirley was an artist and had a talent for handcrafting,
quilting, writing, singing, playing piano and cooking. She
will be best remembered for her cooking and her kind and gentle
spirit.
Shirley always set a place at the table or made a cup of tea
for whoever walked through the door. She was a very social
person who loved to have people around, so it is no surprise that her
extended family included many people who were once
strangers.
In 2020, Shirley decided that it was time to fulfill that
dream of living in Argyle, or it was not going to happen. In
2022, at the age of 93, that dream became a reality when she and her
daughter made the move to Argyle Sounds. Although her time
here was short, she was so happy to spend the final chapter of her
life in her beloved Argyle…enjoying walks on the wharf,
lunches at Le Village, Sunday dinner at Wimmie and Norm’s
with family, time with her great grandsons, rides to get ice cream and
sunsets on the porch.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Laurie of Argyle
Sound. Her love of children continues through her grandson
Zachary, his wife Fallon and their children; Lilah and Lainey and her
grandson Jonah, his companion Jaden and his sons; Bodi, Finnley and
their mother Brittany Sherman.
A special thanks goes to the staff at Yarmouth Heights for
caring for her in her final days. Donations can be made to a
charity of choice or to Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, 20
Eglinton Avenue West, 16th Floor, Toronto,
Ontario M4R 1K8
A family celebration of life will be held at a later
date.
