Shirley Monsma Obituary
Monsma, Sjoukje “Shirley”
Passed away peacefully on January 16th, 2025 at the age of 89. Shirley (nee Zuidema) was blessed to share Christmas and New Years with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and is now reunited with her beloved husband, Allen Monsma, of 65 years. Loving Mother of Connie Bradt (Rick) and Audrey DeJong (Peter). Cherished ‘Oma’ of Ashley (Sam), Tyler (Sarah), Corey, Elise (Andrew) and Tineke (Jason), and ‘2-Oma’ of Daphne, Micah, Arjen, Anna, Miles, Beatrice and Clive.
Born in Murmerwoude (Moarrewâld), Netherlands, in 1935, Sjoukje was a kind, humble and faithful woman who loved her family deeply, cared for her neighbours, and dedicated her time, talent and treasure to blessing others with simple acts of kindness.
Together with her childhood sweetheart and new husband, Allen, Shirley arrived in Canada in 1956 with dreams, faith and $56 dollars. It wasn’t long before she established a circle of life-long friends and neighbours in her new community of Kingsville. She was a faithful member of Faith Reformed Church Kingsville, where she worshiped and quietly worked behind-the-scenes for more than sixty years. From church bazaars to chili nights to choir, she inspired many with her faith and friendship.
More recently, Shirley extended her generous spirit to Season’s Retirement Community in Strathroy and her new local church, St. Andrew’s Beechwood Presbyterian. Just this fall, Shirley spearheaded a Season’s initiative to knit 125 hand-made toques for Childcan, a charity supporting children and youth living with cancer.
Shirley was known for being a good listener, providing care and support, no matter the circumstance. If you had a burden you needed to share, or simply wanted to share a cup of tea, she was there for you. It is impossible to count the lives that have been blessed by Shirley’s warm hospitality and compassion.
From her matriomonial send-off from the Netherlands to Canada, until her last breath, Shirley was guided by God’s Word, trusting in His promise: “I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” (Psalm 32: 8). It was a promise she shared with others, gently counseling and watching over those around her, and teaching by her example of faith, family and friendship. Her example is written into our hearts, and gives us comfort as we grieve her passing.
Shirley’s family welcomes members of the community for visitation at Reid Funeral Home, 14 Russell Street, Leamington (519-326-2631) in Leamington on Sunday, January 19th at between 5pm – 8pm EST. A visitation will be held at Faith Reformed Church Kingsville on Monday, January 20th at 10am EST, followed by a funeral service at 11am.
Please direct all gifts in memory of Shirley to Faith Reformed Church Kingsville (kingsvillefrc.ca), St. Andrew’s Beechwood Presbyterian Church or the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.
Psalm 29:11
The Lord gives strength to his people;
the Lord blesses his people with peace.
