Shirley Joyce Clare
1934-2025
Shirley J. Clare, 90, of Moncton and formerly of
West River passed away peacefully on January 18th, 2025 at the Moncton
Hospital with her family by her side. She was born in Cape
Breton, NS on February 1st, 1934 the daughter of the late Edward and
Florence (Spurrell) Mercer.
Shirley met Ron in Cape Breton when they were young; they
were married in 1951 and Ron joined the army and swept her away to
travel the world and soon after, started a family. Her family was her
life; she was always asking about how they were doing and what they
were up to. The impression she left on everyone will never be
forgotten as she was compassionate and caring. We can’t
forget to mention how stubborn and saucy she was and you knew you were
I trouble if she pointed and wagged her crooked finger at
you.
Shirley had a way of making a room light up with her smile
and her witty sense of humour. She was never shy to say what was on
her mind and give you advice, even if you didn’t ask for it.
Two things she loved to do was bake and cook; you’d always
catch her with doughy hands making multiple loaves of bread. She was
involved with any club that had a bake sale including the Lions Club
in Riverside, West River Church, and the Fundy Curling Club. We also
can’t forget to include how much she loved curling and how
much fun her and Ron had together going. Besides curling, she loved to
play baseball as the pitcher while Ron was stationed in
Quebec.
You were an inspiration for us all. We
know you wouldn’t want a lot of tears but to remember all the good
times and share a laugh over a funny story as we reminisce.
She will be deeply missed by her daughters, Sharon
MacDonald (Jim) of Moncton and Ina Lynn Carter (Greg) of Lower Cape;
sons, Brian Clare (Sandra) of Ontario and Ronald Clare (Kathy) of
Saint John; her five treasured grandchildren, Kelly (Mark), Christine
(Perry), Jacquelynn, Eric (Jessica) and Mary; her precious great
grandchildren, Shantelle, Katie, Julia, Angus and Atlas, as well as
her great-great grandchildren. She will also be missed by her nieces,
nephews, and all her extended family and friends.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate
families. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her
husband, Ronald Angus Clare (2009).
Honouring
Shirley’s own wishes there will be no visitation. A Memorial
Service will be held at the Albert County Funeral Home on Wednesday,
January 22nd, 2025 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Leonard Geldart officiating.
Shirley’s niece and namesake just had a devastating
fire that took their home. For those who wish to make a donation to

Shirley’s heart, the direct email to send money slweatherbee@gmail.com
