Shirley Greaves
1926-2025
Shirley was born in Ottawa, Ontario on October 1, 1926 to E.J. and Anna Tapp. She died at the impressive age of 98, from complications of metastatic breast cancer at her residence in Chartwell Hilldale Retirement Home, Thunder Bay on February 18, 2025, just as the sun was rising.
Shirley spent her early years in Lennoxville, Quebec after which she earned her Nursing Diploma at the Ottawa Civic Hospital and her specialty nursing certificate at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in New Jersey.
On December 16, 1950, Shirley and Richard (Dick) Keegan were married in Ottawa, after which they moved with Canada Malting Company to Winnipeg and Toronto before settling in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) in 1965. Dick died on December 23, 1993 in Thunder Bay. Finding love a second time, Shirley and William (Bill) Greaves were married in Thunder Bay on June 14, 1996.
An active member of St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. She was part of the Mount Baldy Ski Hill family, was a regular bridge player and a Port Arthur General Hospital volunteer. The family camp on Island Lake was a special place where she spent many happy days enjoying sunsets, hummingbirds, the serenade of the loons, tending her flowers and watching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren grow and flourish. Shirley also enjoyed extensive international travel with Puerto Vallarta holding a special place in her heart.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Bill in February 2024, as well as brothers Lorne, Donald and William and sister Joan Bassam. She is survived by her children Susan Simpson (Evan) and Jeffrey Keegan (Joanne), Bill’s children William Greaves Jr. (Dawn Woodhouse), Susan Porlier (David), Sandra Greaves and brother-in-law Douglas Bassam. Also surviving are loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Many thanks go out to Dr. K. Calonego, Cancer Clinic staff (April Pilon NP, Dr. K. Simpson, Dr. M. Anthes), Homecare staff from Paramed and Partners in Rehab, as well as the Chartwell Hilldale staff for their caring and compassionate service. Shirley received exceptional care from our local health practitioners and support services over these past years. The support of the Greaves family also gave great comfort to Shirley.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at a later date at St. Michael and All Angels Church.
If you so choose, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to Make-A-Wish Canada, St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church (Thunder Bay) or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be expressed at www.sargentandson.com.
