My mother was a person who liked to help others. She was a loving mom
who, until her last breath prayed for her now 62-year-old daughter, her only child. For years, mom took care of her own mother until she died. She loved and was a faithful wife to her husband and cared for him until he went to be with the Lord. Then as her elder sister aged, she spent many pleasant (and some not so pleasant ) hours with her, helping her, providing for her a listening ear when she needed to share the troubles and sorrows of her heart, and reminiscing about ‘the old days’. She regularly visited a dear friend and colleague of hers who was ill in order to cheer her; when her husband passed, she spent many more hours with her, consoling her and sharing precious memories. She worked at a local high school for many years providing excellent service and doing her best to help keep the young people in her care out of trouble with the administration. She was like a mom to several of the girlfriends of a very good neighbor, and I could go on with the stories of many other friends and family members. To honor her, this obituary will not include a list of names that will mean nothing to anyone but a very few people. Instead, it will share with anyone who reads it a little bit of her legacy. It is said that first words and last words are very important. First words are most important to the parents of a child because each parent hopes that “mama” or “dada” will be their little one’s first word. In some cultures, these words are recorded in a baby book. But last words are important for a different reason, because they have the potential to settle old relationship conflicts and to leave behind a legacy of wisdom gained through lived experience. That is what I would like to share with anyone who will read this, one of mom’s ‘last words.’ I had the great privilege of advocating for her and just being with her in her last few days on this earth. One of the most profound things she said to me was, “I am sorry I waited so long to get ready.” My mother is a dear soul who went to be with Jesus at about 4:40 a.m. on February 1, 2025. She was loved (and is loved) by many. She will be missed.
