Shirley Ann Daniel (nee, Miller) passed away peacefully at Wintergreene Estates, Regina, SK, on Friday, January 31, 2025, at the age of 96 years from a stroke, supported with family and the Lord.
Shirley was born on the Miller family farm near Avonlea. After graduating grade 12, she moved to work in Regina until she began Nurses training in Moose Jaw, SK. Mom then nursed at Lashburn, SK. hospital until November 1949 when after a short six-week courtship she married Peter Junior Daniel, joining the Daniel family farm just north of Avonlea, SK. She was a partner in the farming operations until retirement to Moose Jaw in 1982. Shirley was a dedicated lifelong volunteer serving her communities, church and hospitals. She was an active member of the United Church, Eastern Star, School Board, Avonlea Historical Committee, Homecoming Committee and involved in many sport recreation activities and festivals. She was instrumental in creating the Miller Family Record Book and Miller Family Cookbook as well as serving on the annual family picnic committee. She was especially proud to be Canadian and honored the military service of her father, brother and many others. As a historian she taught us to respect the past, be curious about the present and not be afraid to try or learn something new or explore new places. Some of her favorite travels were to South Korea, Japan, Hawaii, Caribbean, Mexico, across Canada and any time spent with family anywhere. Shirley had hobbies of baking, crocheting blankets, photography, decorating the home for all occasions, camping, fishing, travelling, visiting and staying physically active. Mom’s great sense of humor, music, singing and playing piano always shone as did her pride of her Irish ancestry spirit. From a large Miller family mom was one of 49 grandchildren. She enjoyed visiting and supporting family, friends and with her zest for living she always attracted new friends wherever the journey of life took her. Mom created a home of love and warmth where everyone was welcomed and loved to visit in person or the phone. Mom was always interested and eager to learn something new, embracing with a positive attitude and kept up on current events and advancements but especially the activities and education of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
One of her most important passions was improving and supporting the health sector in attaining the medical and holistic quality of life for everyone from birth to end of life. Shirley was recognized for her significant contributions and commitment to getting the hospital auxiliary gift shop operating, projects to raise funds for the MJ Union Hospital, advancing the local and national hospital auxiliary organizations and mobilizing groups of knitters for various projects.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Peter Junior Daniel; sisters, Audrey Sovdi (Lloyd), Reta Waugh (Ralph); brothers, Rodger Miller, and Stanley Miller (Margaret); as well as son-in law Ken Harley. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Judith Harley of Nokomis, Mary Lou Daniel (Bob Wynia) of Sherwood Park, Lana Daniel (Carl Neggers) of Regina; sons, Peter Dwain Daniel (Joan) of Candle Lake, David Daniel of Moose Jaw and Glen Daniel of Avonlea. Shirley enjoyed 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces all who were special to mom.
Celebration of Shirley’s Life will be announced at a later date when family and friends can gather. Donations in memory could be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation, Hospital Auxiliary or any United Church of your choice.
