With great sadness our family announces our beloved Shawn Douglas Campbell’s peaceful passing in the early hours of April 17th 2025 in New Glasgow, NS after a quiet, unwaveringly hopeful, and unflinching battle with pancreatic cancer.
Shawn went to sleep peacefully surrounded by his family and best friends. He was the beloved husband of Tracey, loving father to Caden, devoted son to Diane (and the late Joel), cherished brother to Laura and Loel and a loyal friend to so many.
Shawn was a consummate professional mechanic and naturally gifted problem solver—if he couldn’t fix it, it likely couldn’t be done. He dedicated his professional life to running the family business—Campbell’s Auto Services in Stellarton, NS. Shawn started working alongside his Dad (Joel) from an early age. Upon graduating from SHS he ventured to Saint Mary’s for business studies, deciding to return to the family business and bringing his knowledge and vision to grow the business and its reputation to a point where people from all over the Maritimes delivered their autos to be cared for by him and his team. He kept up with his studies throughout his career traveling to Las Vegas, Nashville, and New York (as recently as Dec 2024) for various seminars to make sure he was always ahead of the curve in the rapidly shifting industry and retain his mastery of his craft. Shawn had a talent and drive which accorded him much respect in his industry, with a special focus on imported/European autos. He especially loved foreign cars, Volvos and working on his boats. People trusted and counted on him to solve their most complicated issues. Always taking time with his clients to share a story or have a laugh, he was relatable and personable to no end, always knowing how to get to the heart of matters. He was a lifelong learner and stayed ahead of technology. As Caden says, “My Dad knew how to do anything”.
Above all though, what he worked so hard for was his family – selflessly. Shawn was the happiest when surrounded by his family and closest friends. He loved nothing more than snuggling up in bed or on the couch with Tracey, Caden and Moose at the end of the week and putting a movie on. He loved family dinners and holiday gatherings. Shawn was so present and there for everyone, always. Till his final rest, he surrounded himself with warmth and we all basked in his unconditional love.
Shawn was bright and curious about many things. He loved having expansive discussions on all kinds of topics and engaging with many people. We will miss that smile and contagious laughter that went right into our souls. Shawn knew how to appreciate the best things in life no matter the season. He loved to ski—he traveled to Colorado, Quebec, and to Europe to conquer various ski mountains. He loved to plow out his loved ones’ driveways without notice from the grips of a long winter and would walk through colourful forests in the fall. With Tracey and Caden, for many summers they were on countless adventures around the Maritimes in their RV’s, making new friends and celebrating with other families. Although he was taken from us too soon, we take solace in the fact he drank deeply from the cup of life and harvested a rich bounty of love, purpose, and joy.
Next to being with his family and friends, Shawn was happiest when he was either on or near the water. He loved Pictou County. He had seen many parts of the world and none touched the love he had for his native county. He would be the first to put the boat in for the season and the last to take it out. It was at the cottage where he found the most joy and peace – bonfires, down on the dock, towing Caden, boating. Shawn was a steward of many things and people, always making sure that things were taken care of. His constant and capable acts of service were a testament to how deeply he loved those around him, and his legacy of love and stewardship endures in our hearts and memories.
We are heartbroken. Shawn will be deeply missed forever. We will always keep his lessons, wisdom, and insights alive through our futures.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to plant a tree: (www.alivingtribute.ca) or to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust (www.nsnt.ca).
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to be announced.
