Sandra Sarka Obituary
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our sister, Sandra Meleshinski Sarka on January 06, 2025, after a brief (but incredibly brave) battle with cancer.
Sandy is pre-deceased by her parents, Nick Meleshinski, Elsie (nee Chewka) Meleshinski Sanders, and Earl Sanders; her siblings, Durrell (Sandra) and Angela (Craig) Sanders. Sandy is survived by her siblings Calvin (Karen) Meleshinski, Patricia (Jacob) Dyck, Michelle (Mathieu) Dery, Doug (Barbara) Sanders & Len (Donna) Sanders. She is also survived by numerous nieces & nephews.
Sandy was born in Roblin, Manitoba on September 02, 1956. The Meleshinski family moved first to Gerald, Saskatchewan (1958) and later to Churchbridge, Saskatchewan (1960) for Nick’s work. It was in Churchbridge that Nick passed away in 1964. Earl Sanders married Elsie in 1966 and in 1970, the family moved to Grande Cache, Alberta for Earl’s work. The family then re-located to Hinton, Alberta in 1972. Sandy lived in Hinton for 30 years until moving to Kelowna, British Columbia in 2003.
Not only was Sandy a steadfast protector of her siblings, she also was involved in the lives of their children, and children’s children. She never missed a wedding or celebration involving her family. Sandy found great purpose & pride and was dedicated to her career as a school bus driver (first in Hinton and then in Kelowna). Sandy started with the Central Okanagan Public School District in September 2003 and remained there until her retirement in 2022. In Sandy’s own words, « I miss the kids and the bus driving » so much so that she returned as a casual driver shortly after her retirement and did casual driving until June 2024.
Sandy was deeply passionate about her role and took it seriously, especially during her many years on the inclusive education bus routes. Her genuine care and compassion for the students who rode on her bus route were evident every day, earning her the admiration and love from students, parents, and colleagues alike. As an exceptional bus driver, Sandy approached each day with a positive, « whatever it takes » attitude. Those who knew and worked with her will remember Sandy as a kind, caring, and gentle soul who truly embraced life with warmth and joy.
As per Sandy’s wishes, no funeral service will be held.
