There are no words that can express the intense sorrow that we feel as we share the passing of our dear beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
On the morning of Friday February 7th 2025, Samira Sayeh peacefully passed away at Cité de la Santé hospital in Laval, Québec.
Samira was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer on October 31st, 2024 and fought with every ounce of strength she had until the very end. We are in utter disbelief that, just moments ago, she was filling our days with her beautiful, positive presence and enriching our lives with cherished moments. She was ripped away from us leaving a vast void that we must now learn to live with.
Samira will be lovingly remembered by her son and daughter: Nadia (Felipe Castro) and Samer (Stephanie Mitri). She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren: Leo, Felix, Anna and John. She will be survived by her sister Souhaila (late Ahmad Matar) as well as numerous family members, relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 29 years Nasri, her late brother Souhail, her mother Laila and her Father Sami.
Samira was a proud Palestinian whose parents escaped the mass expulsion (Nakba) when they were young. She was born in Lebanon on November 3rd, 1956, and in 1963 her family moved to Kuwait. She obtained a degree in Political Science from Kuwait University where she worked as a teaching assistant, and in 1982, she married the love of her life, the late Nasri Afara.
In the summer of 1990, Samira, Nasri and their two children, Nadia and Samer, were vacationing in Cyprus when the golf war changed their lives forever. Due to their Palestinian origin, returning to Kuwait became a challenge. Having previously applied for immigration to Canada, they decided to remain in Cyprus, anxiously awaiting news of their acceptance. During their 18 months stay, they lived in daily fear of expulsion while clinging to hope for a new beginning in Canada. Despite the uncertainty, Samira and Nasri made sure their children experienced joy, exploring Cyprus’s breathtaking mountains, warm sandy shores, and rich historical sites.
In April 1992, the family finally immigrated to Canada, but their challenges were far from over. Samira and Nasri had to rebuild their lives from the ground up, unable to secure employment in their respective fields. With remarkable determination, Samira started from scratch, taking a job as a telemarketer at Foundever in 1998. It didn’t take long for her intelligence, dedication, and warm personality to stand out—she rose through the ranks, earning recognition as a highly respected Payroll Manager. Balancing full-time work and homemaking, she rarely had a moment to herself yet still managed to participate in the Task Force for Palestine at St. George Church, a cause close to her heart. Sadly in 2008, Nasri was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Samira continued to carry out her responsibilities while also caring for him until his unfortunate passing in February 2011.
In the years that followed Samira devoted herself to helping her aging mother, supporting Nadia and Samer in their busy lives and growing families, all while continuing to work at Foundever. She retired in May 2024, looking forward to finally enjoying life with no major responsibilities, and made the most of her short-lived freedom.
To say that Samira was an extraordinary person is an understatement. She was an angel in human form, devoting her life to others, not only offering kindness and support but often taking on more than her share of responsibilities for those around her. Through it all, her presence remained gentle and positive, a source of warmth and comfort to everyone around her. Samira was determined to enjoy her life to the fullest no matter how many hardships she faced. She stood strong, never allowing life’s challenges to shake her spirit. Her resilience was nothing short of remarkable, a testament to her unwavering strength and grace. Anyone who met her, even briefly, couldn’t help but love her. Her grandchildren absolutely adored their beloved “Teta.” She lived her entire life without ever causing anyone grief, and she continued to smile until her very last moment. Samira was an exceptional, one-of-a-kind soul—a rare and precious jewel whose light will never fade.
