Sam Shneer, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on March 21, 2025, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was born on December 23, 1924, in Toronto, Ontario, and was predeceased by his older brother, Ben and his sister-in-law Fay. He is survived by his younger brother, Harold, brother-in-law Harold Kershen, and sisters-in-law Julie and Sandy. He was also predeceased by his brother-in-law Sam Kershen.
In 1945, Sam married the love of his life, Helen, and they shared 54 beautiful years together. Their love and commitment to each other were an inspiration to all who knew them. Sam was a devoted father to his three children, Sharleen, (married to Larry Hoffman), Patti, (married to Ezra Ballas), and Jeffrey. He was also a loving grandfather to Stephanie, Jodi, Jordana, Michael, and Zachary, and a cherished great-grandfather to 11 great-grandchildren.
Sam’s life was marked by his dedication to his family and his hard work. He attended Grace St. Public School and Harbord Collegiate, where he developed a love for sports that stayed with him throughout his life. He could watch sports all day, finding joy and excitement in every game. In the early 1940s, he was drafted into the army and served at Camp Borden for approximately four years, demonstrating his commitment to his country.
After his military service, Sam worked as a salesman for Budget Household before venturing into entrepreneurship with his brother, Harold. Together, they opened three Mr. Donut shops, showcasing Sam’s entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic. He was a hard-working man and a dedicated provider for his family, always putting their needs above his own.
In his final years, Sam resided at Amica Retirement Home, where he lived independently until a fall just days before his 100th birthday. Despite this setback, he remained strong and resilient until the end.
Sam’s funeral will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, March 24, at the Bathurst Lawn Cemetery, Kiever Podlier Society. In lieu of flowers, he requested that donations be given to Beit Halochem Canada Disabled Vets of Israel, reflecting his compassion and concern for others.
Sam Shneer will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his dedication to hard work, and his kind and generous spirit. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him, and may he rest in peace.
