Harriette Ruth Foster (known as « Ruth ») was born in Creelman, Saskatchewan on September 26th, 1923. Due to the dirty 30’s and its effect on farming in the south, her family along with her five siblings moved north and began farming near Kinistino, Saskatchewan. After moving, she took grades 9 to 11 by correspondence at Viking School and then attended Kinistino High School for grade 12. Profound changes came to the family when her father was killed in a truck-train accident just before her final grade 12 exams. Farming was left to her brothers, and Ruth continued her studies at Regina Normal School to become a school teacher. Thus began Ruth’s lifelong career. She taught at Norden and East Bend School before taking a position within the Saskatoon Public School system. Following teaching at Caswell she accepted an exchange position in Los Angeles. This was a memorable time as she made many good friends and toured Acapulco, Mexico City, Oaxaca, and several Mexican villages. Always interested in learning, she took summer school earning degrees in the arts and education. When she returned to Saskatoon she taught at Queen Elizabeth, Haultain, and River Heights.
Travel intrigued her and she toured the Canadian Provinces, parts of the United States, Europe, Alaska, and Benin, Africa.
Upon retiring, Ruth took up art with the Broadway Painters and later with Artists’ Workshop, participating in many shows and sales. Although her days were filled with people and things, there remained a void in her life. In 1995, her niece Charlene invited Ruth to a Billy Graham Crusade in Saskatoon, where she realized that God loved her despite her shortcomings and faults. She became a committed Christian and prayer warrior for her whole extended family.
Although she never married, she had a large family. She was an aunt, a great aunt, and a great- great aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Mary Jane Foster, her much younger sisters Ruby and Wilhelmina, her brother Howard (and spouse Louise), her brother Lake, her sister Edie, and her sister Elizabeth (and spouse Normand) Breiter. She leaves to mourn her sister Sheila (and Bernard) Mayerle and her sister-in-law Gladys Foster. Also left to mourn are all her family of nieces and nephews.
Ruth’s Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2025, in the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 07 McWillie Ave, Saskatoon, SK. Officiated by Pastor Leighton. Interment will take place at the Kinistino Cemetery, Kinistino No. 459, Kinistino, SK.
Martens Warman Funeral Home is honoured to be entrusted with Ruth Foster’s care and arrangements.
