Ruth Ann Collins died on January 24, 2025, nine days after her 94th birthday. Although a stroke had stolen many of her memories years earlier, she clung to the people in her life — her husband of 65 years, Paul, who had died four years before, her two daughters, Susan and Catherine, her son-in-law, Doug Frantz, and her grandchildren, Rebecca, Nick and Elizabeth. Even though the wriggling mass of great-grandchildren were too difficult to track, she still enjoyed their antics.
After her death, one of her grandsons-in-law wrote that he learned something important from watching Ruth Ann one summer while she sat on the porch watching her extended family. “Ruth Ann sat next to Paul, smiling, happy and friendly, clearly confused by what was going on, but not fearful,” he wrote. “Seeing her, I realized, this is what love is…just finding comfort in being next to your partner and knowing that it’s all going to be good.’”
Ruth Ann loved adventures — from gathering fiddleheads in the early spring in the Quebec countryside to filling the bathtub with her experimental yarn dyes, much to the delight of her daughters for whom this was an excuse not to bathe.
Ruth Ann would pick up small snakes, toads and insects to encourage a fearless love of nature in her children and grandchildren. She taught the little ones basic math skills with patience and a cribbage board. Culinary adventures, such as making toffee, became a lesson in chemistry. And long before fermentation became a TikTok thing, she was making yogurt, fermenting fruit, and baking bread. She always had two books in her purse – one in French and one in English. She was a weaver and a quilter.
At the saltbox house in Eagle Head that she loved so much, Ruth Ann told her city-raised grandchildren not to turn their backs on a bear while walking in the woods and to keep an eye on the tide as it came in. It never occurred to her that a three-year-old would object to a lunch of a big bowl of mussels.
In the years before basic services, such as education, were available for children with developmental and physical disabilities, she fought hard for her own child, challenging the status quo and pre-conceived limits on what those children could accomplish.
After years of moving, from the Maritimes, to Montreal, Chicago and New York, she and Paul returned to Nova Scotia, which they always considered home. After two decades on the South Shore, Ruth Ann and Paul spent their last years in Halifax, where she kept a watchful eye on the seagulls circling overhead and the grackles roosting on her windowsill.
