TALBOT: ERNEST “RUSSELL” CLIFTON
Russell passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side at Huronview Home for the Aged, on Monday March 3, 2025, at the age of 76. Loving father of Tracy & Rob Rau, Jann & Michael Van Massenhoven, Aimee & Matthew Townsend, and Adam Talbot & Naomi MacLeod. Cherished by his seven grandsons, Dustin & Ryan Rau, Darcy, and Bailey & Karley Van Massenhoven, the late Kalvin Van Massenhoven, Lucas, and Mitchell Townsend who will cherish the time they were able to spend with their insightful grandfather.
Russell was known for his thirst for knowledge and always finding an inventive way to apply what he learned.
In grade 9 & 10, Russ majored in Welding. After high school, Russ was employed on the family farm outside of Kippen, ON. After one year he decided to go to night school, taking 7 years to complete his studies.
Russ got job in London, ON, at KNG, a small company in 1969, where he became a certified draftsman. In 1974 he got a job at General Motors in London. He started off living in London, but didn’t enjoy city living. It wasn’t long after that he designed and built his dream home where he settled his family in Varna, ON in 1980. He designed the house himself, in the shape of a « T » and did a lot of the finishing work himself. This is where he went on to raise his four Children with Cheryl while commuting daily back and forth to London. He soon realized the need for an additional income in 1975 when he started his own home business called Master Designs. Russ had an unwavering commitment to his occupation at General Motors (now General Dynamics) where he designed Armored Vehicles for nearly 30 years. In his accomplished years at GM, he was a part of historical moments, where many articles and mementos emerged. Russ was an extremely hard worker who never veered from his goal of providing for his family, noticeably only wanting the best life for his children. He always believed in making sure his children got the proper education to succeed in life. Those who knew Russ will remember him for his numerous meticulous vehicle restorations, and his backyard mechanic skills. He could be spotted driving his pride, a 1929 Ford Model A truck, which doubled as sleeping quarters for himself and Cheryl while camping at Shelter Valley outside of Goderich, ON. Russ loved nature and often could be found in the bush harvesting firewood. Russ was also known by his friends for making batches of wine that would easily start off any party in a hurry. Russ would never shy away from a chance to host or partake in a party in turn making it a memorable one. Russ was forced to slow down when he experienced an unexpected massive stroke in June 2003. This only reinforced he was a pillar of strength. Thankfully, Russ was always holding a camera and loved to take photos of whatever he could be a part of. He was doing selfies before they became popular. He documented his many passions in life through his photos and he truly loved taking photos of his whole family in every setting.
Cremation has taken place.
