Rozalia was born in Eger, Hungary to Josef and Rozallia Bartok on June 11, 1938. Her young life was saddened by the sorrow of World War II and its horrors. At a very young age, she witnessed pain, death and injustice that no child should ever have to see. After the war ended, she apprenticed as a high voltage electrician.
In time, she met Alexander Vass. He was a safe haven for her and took care of her through times of starvation so she knew he would make a good husband. They were married and were blessed with their son, Alexander Vass. Shortly after that, the Hungarian Revolution began, and they had to run for their lives. They were separated for a time. Alex went ahead of them and Rozalia carried her new son on her front in case she might be shot in the back. They ended up meeting by coincidence along the way and came the rest of the way together. They navigated land mines, check points, and gunfire all successfully until they eventually reached Vienna on foot.
They obtained tickets to go to Australia by boat but missed it. Rozalia quickly got back into line and obtained tickets to Canada, which was a testament to her resilience. They arrived in Liverpool and departed on the SS Britannic III to Halifax on February 8, 1957. They were then sent to Regina, but could not find work, so they took a train to Saskatoon where they spent the remainder of their 70 years together. It was rare to see mom and dad apart.
Once she arrived in Saskatoon, she began cleaning houses to make a living and this is where her life changed. She met one of Jehovah’s Witnesses who explained that the Bible shows this life is not how it’s meant to be, and that soon pain and suffering will be gone, the dead brought back to life, and justice done for all mankind. She recognized this to be the truth she was looking for all her life. Her despair soon turned to love, hope and forgiveness. This shaped her whole life moving forward and her love for her God Jehovah was shown in all the decisions she made, and in the warmth she extended to those who crossed her path.
Rozalia was an amazing seamstress and furrier working at shops in downtown Saskatoon. She designed clothes, coats, and anything else anyone wanted. Her flair for fashion was groundbreaking. She also worked with dad in his forklift business, fixing and painting forklifts. She was known for her cooking, her hospitality, her love of music and fine things in life. Children, animals, and people of all sorts were drawn to her for her magnetic smile, empathetic and wise personality. They knew she cared and would care for them.
Her mom joined her in Canada in 1965 and Rozalia looked after her until her passing in 2008. Mom returned to Hungary seven times to see her family there. She enjoyed her travels to Hawaii and many summers of fishing at Delaronde Lake.
Rozalia was predeceased by her father Josef, mother Rozallia, sister Margaret, son Alexander. She leaves to mourn her husband of 70 years Alex, her 2 daughters Margaret (Rick) Gardiner, Lisa Vass, grandsons Paul (Erica) Vass, and Christopher Vass, and great grand children, Arie, Trip, Connor, and Hailey.
We would like to thank the staff at RUH for the exceptional care she received during her final days and the many friends that have supported us. We know this is not goodbye, but see you later. Mom believed John 5:28,29 with all her heart where it says: “Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.“ We eagerly await that day when we will be reunited with her once again.
In accordance with her wishes, a private family memorial will be held. We invite you to visit JW.org to learn more about the better future ahead. Though she is no longer with us, Rozalia’s love, hope, and faith will live on in all those who were blessed enough to know her.
Martens Warman Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the care and arrangements for Rozalia Vass.
