With heavy hearts and an appreciation
for a life well lived, the family of Ron
Corbett announce his passing on January 25, 2025 at the
age of 80.
The son of William and Frances (Knickle)
Corbett, Ron was born and raised in Bible Hill, Nova Scotia.
When he was 16, Ron jumped off the back of a pick-up truck
when he saw Lil, the girl who would become the love of his
life. They married in 1967 and together they raised their
three daughters.
Ron had a long and diverse work life. He
joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1966 where he worked for 5
years as a Communication Systems Tech. In 1971 Ron
changed course and attended St Francis Xavier
University where he obtained his BA with Honours in Philosophy. He
then moved to Toronto with his wife and young daughters and received
his Masters of Environmental Studies from York University
in 1978. Over the next 10 years Ron pursued a
career in Urban Planning, first in Cayuga, Ontario and then in
Kentville, Nova Scotia.
In 1985 Ron made Sackville, New
Brunswick his forever home when he joined Mount Allison University as
Senior Research Associate with the Rural and Small Town Studies
Program. Here, Ron continued to pursue his interest in housing, land
use and economic and community development. He also taught several
courses in the Department of Geography and enjoyed the relationships
he built with students and faculty.
After working as Director of Planning
for Tantramar Planning District Commission in the 1990’s, Ron started
Virtual Planning Inc, an independent consulting company. In this
capacity, Ron worked with provincial and federal government
departments, municipalities, planning commissions and
universities.
In his retirement, Ron continued to work
on planning projects that interested him. He was a Town Councillor and
a member of the Heritage Board. He loved to travel, taking his wife to
Holland, Hawaii and their dream of driving Route 66 in his 1979
Corvette. Closer to home, Ron enjoyed spontaneous adventures
with his family and spirited debates with friends over coffee. Ron
loved collecting art and especially sought out the works of local
artists and authors.
Ron was a deeply kind and generous
person who would go out of his way to help the people in his
life. He loved socializing and he was known for his
passionate viewpoints, his wry sense of humour and his knack for
telling entertaining stories. A man of faith, Ron was a member of Main
St Baptist Church where he cherished fellowship with the congregation
and contributing to church matters.
Ron is deeply missed by his wife of 57
years, Lillian (Herring); their three daughters, Laura
(Sherman), Juanita (Stephen) and Tara; seven grandchildren Zach
(Kristiann), Ethan, Teagan, Mackenzie, Benjamin, Elijah and Madison;
sister Susan (Daryl Mullin) and brother Thomas (Sue); many friends,
colleagues, caregivers and extended family.
Arrangements are under the care and
supervision of Jones Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held
at a later date, to be announced.
Donations in memory of Ron can be made
to The Alzheimer Society of Canada, Parkinson Canada or a charity of
your choice
