JOHANSSON, Rolf
1931 – 2024
We are saddened to announce the sudden passing of our dad, Rolf Vilhelm Johansson on Friday, December 20, 2024 at the age of 93 years. Rolf was born on August 28, 1931, at Toronto, Ontario to David and Nelly Johansson. He was the first born, his brother, Eric and his sister, Christine ‘Tina’ followed. The family lived in Oakville, Ontario on Chartwell Road. Rolf attended Linbrook School and Oakville Trafalgar High School where he was a star football player. In High School, Rolf met Muriel Shepherd whom he married on May 27, 1955, at St. John’s United Church. The family grew by one, when Sandra Lynne was born in 1956. In 1963, Karen Leigh was added to the family, making a family of four. The family moved to London, Ontario and then to Amherstburg, Ontario, before moving west in 1968 to Calgary, Alberta. Rolf’s love of the family cottage by Parry Sound, Ontario on Clear Lake made it hard for him to leave but Calgary became home. Rolf worked for the City of Calgary briefly, before joining Stanley Associates Engineering in 1970, where he worked for thirty-five plus years. Rolf was never ready to retire and went on his own with RVJ Consulting until the age of 92. Our Dad/Grandpa had the most amazing zest for life. He was a private pilot, sailboat captain, mountaineer, skier, marathon runner and just about anything else that was adventurous right up into his 90’s. Each of us had a very special bond with him. Above all else, he loved family time and would often marvel at how big our family had grown. He was a very proud Swede and loved his heritage. He kept in touch with family members in Sweden. Dad loved to travel whether for work or pleasure. He worked in South Africa, Korea, Barbados, New York State, British Columbia, Saskatoon, Yellow Knife and Maryland States, to name a few. He loved his travels to British Columbia, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Sweden, England, Scotland, Wyoming, California, and Hawaii, as well as sailing out of Eagle Harbour Yacht Club in North Vancouver. Rolf’s remarkable career in Engineering was marked by both Academic and Professional excellence. B.SC Civil Engineering: University Toronto and M.Eng; Environmental Design: University of Calgary. Professional Affiliations: APEGA, EGBC, APEGS, WCWWA, COPA, and AOPA. Dad instilled in each of us to try something adventurous and that no matter what you are never too old. Rolf will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Sandra (Bill) Matheson and Karen (John) Radics; his nine grandchildren, his nineteen great grandchildren and his one great great grandchild. He will also be sadly missed by his sister, Tina (Peter) Prichard and his two nephews, all of Collingwood, Ontario; as well as his dear friend, Margaret of Aldergrove, British Columbia. Rolf was predeceased by his wife, Muriel, his parents, David and Nelly and his brother, Eric. A small Family Gathering will be held at a later date. If desired, in lieu of Memorial Donations in Rolf’s honor, please help someone in need and have a toast with a glass of red wine to our Dad. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.
