“Poor Bachelor Boy” (Kimataapaniikapi); “Three Riders” (Niookska Kiitoopii)
March 24, 1942 – December 30, 2024
It is with profound sadness that the family of Roderick (Rod) North Peigan announces his passing on December 30, 2024. Born on the Piikani Nation, Rod was a proud member of the Seldom Lonesome clan (Miaawaapittsiisi) and Hairy Nose clan (Immoyissksisiiksi). He was the beloved son of Bessie (Big Swan) and Daniel North Peigan and the cherished grandson of Chief Phillip Big Swan (Annie Meat Face) and Victor and Nora (One Owl) North Peigan.
Rod was a devoted husband to Faye (Isbister) North Peigan and a loving father to Danita, Lorelei, Jonathan, Nathan, Rejean, and Lisa. He was an adored grandfather to Stephanie Escobar, Jeremy North Peigan, Malachai North Peigan, Nastasha Weasel Head, Neil Weasel Head, Kira North Peigan, Beau Knowlton, Athena Knowlton, Dante Knowlton, Kassidy NP, Danton NP, Ainsley NP, Naytalia NP, Carter NP, and Manny NP. He was also a proud Papa (great-grandfather) to Hendrix Weasel Head and Xavier North Peigan.
Rod is survived by his siblings Sandra North Peigan, Daniel (Nancy) Northman, Eric North Peigan, Pastor Manfred North Peigan, David North Peigan, Herta North Peigan, Avril Grier, and Dorothy Bedard. He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives from the North Peigan and Big Swan clans. Rod was also a foster father to many children from the Piikani Nation.
He is predeceased by his parents, his beloved sisters Muriel and Diane, his cherished son Ryan, niece Karen NP, nephew Rudy NP, and his adopted brothers Larry Gilbert, Jay Swallow, and Ben George.
Rod was deeply rooted in faith, becoming a born-again Christian as a young man. He supported various ministries and traveled widely as an evangelist, working with ministers across Canada and the United States. His unwavering belief in healing and his compassionate nature left a lasting impact on those he encountered.
A man of many talents, Rod attended St. Cyprian’s and St. Paul’s Residential Schools before graduating from Matthew Halton High School. He furthered his education in welding at SAIT in Calgary and the Lethbridge Community College, later apprenticing under Earl Sargeant in Claresholm.
Rod’s life was marked by dedication to his community. He was a founding member of the Peigan Bus Cooperative and played a key role in economic and justice developments on the Piikani Nation, including establishing the local RCMP detachment. His leadership extended to the Treaty 7 area, where he contributed to the development of Community Futures and advocated for local entrepreneurs.
Rod was a mentor, leader, and coach who devoted himself to his children and grandchildren’s pursuits, particularly in sports. From hockey and baseball to traditional dancing and rodeo, he was always a proud supporter, cheering from the sidelines and sharing his wisdom.
Rod’s legacy is one of faith, kindness, and service. His memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and community members whose lives he touched through his leadership and unwavering compassion.
