It is with sadness that the family of Bob Poirier, of Hantsport, announce his passing on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at the age of 89. Bob lived a full life that was centered around his family. Until the end, he had a keen interest in world affairs, reading, family gatherings and golf.
Born in McMasterville, Quebec on the shores of the Richelieu River, on July 19, 1935, Bob grew up with his parents and eight brothers and sisters. At the age of 17, he made the decision to join the Royal Canadian Air Force where he enjoyed a rewarding 20-year career. It was during a posting in Greenwood that Bob met his future wife, Anna. He spent many happy years working, raising their five children, as well as playing hockey and softball for some of the great Greenwood Bomber teams in the 1960s.
After his proud service in the RCAF, Bob and Anna moved back to her hometown of Hantsport, the place he would call home for over 40 years. Bob worked as a purchasing agent at the physical plant at Acadia University for over 20 years, a job that he took great pride in until his retirement. He was an active member of and volunteer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hantsport, as well as St. John’s Catholic Church in Windsor. While in Hantsport, Bob and Anna were very involved in supporting their five children as they grew up but he especially enjoyed being a grandfather.
In 2012, Bob lost his wife, Anna. He spent his remaining years living with, or near family, in a number of areas such as Niverville, SK, Moose Jaw, SK, Ottawa, Vernon, BC and eventually back in Halifax. It was during these years that Bob found a new passion in life…golf. He loved to practice at the driving range and watch the PGA Tour on TV but enjoyed nothing more than being on the course playing with his family and friends, even in his final year. In addition to golf, Bob loved being with family, good conversation and laughter, a game of cards, listening to his favorite music and enjoying a glass of red wine with a good meal.
Bob is survived by his children, Patty (Ron) Walker, Winnipeg; Monique (Woody) Bennett, Halifax; Diane (Arnold) Telegdi, Tampa, FL; Marc Poirier, Hantsport and Neil Poirier, Whitehorse; grandchildren, Laura, Megan, Jessica, Mary, Mike, Rhiannon, Will and Sam; great-grandchildren, Malcolm, Finn, Callaghan, Sophie, Hayden, Owen and Ronan; as well as sisters, Georgine Ceelen and Michelle Poirier.
Besides his parents, Donat and Pierrette (Blanchard) Poirier, Bob was predeceased by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Anna (McNeil); brothers, Yves and Pierre; sisters, Yolande, Louise, Mariette and Jacqueline.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where visitation will be held 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, February 12. Interment will be held later in the summer in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport alongside his wife, Anna. Donations in memory of Bob may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 5826 South St., Halifax, NS B3H 1S6 or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, 5657 Spring Garden Rd., Box 245, Halifax, NS B3J 3R4.
