Robert James « Jim » Sacouman
1948-2025
Jim Sacouman, 76, of
North Grand Pré, passed away peacefully in the Valley
Hospice on January 1, 2025.
Born in Winnipeg, Jim
grew up persevering through a challenging home life. Despite
adversity, he became a guard on the St. Paul’s High School
football team and president of the Student Council, demonstrating his
determination and leadership from an early age. Encouraged to pursue a
spiritual path, Jim joined the Jesuits in Guelph, Ontario. However,
his journey led him to a different calling, and he later left the
Jesuits. Jim went on to pursue his education in Sociology culminating
in him attaining his Doctorate in Sociology from University of
Toronto.
Jim met and married
Linda Sacouman (née Marshall), and together they moved to
Woodville, Nova Scotia, where they lovingly raised their two
daughters. Jim started working at Acadia University where he would go
on to dedicate his career.
While working with an
aid organization, Jim met Barbara Moore, who became his partner and
steadfast companion. The two eventually moved to Evangeline Beach,
North Grand Pré, where they shared many happy
years.
Jim was known for his
quick wit and ability to bring laughter to any room, as well as his
profound capacity for meaningful conversation. A passionate advocate
for those without a voice, Jim championed causes close to his heart
and inspired others through his actions.
At Acadia University,
Jim served as a beloved professor of Sociology, department head, and
chief negotiator for the Acadia University Faculty Association (AUFA).
He ended his career as Professor Emeritus. He was also a prolific
author, publishing 10 books during his lifetime.
Jim is survived by his
common-law spouse, Barbara Moore; his daughters, Natasha Sacouman
(Kevin Minsky) and Nikki Nemirovsky (Andrew Nemirovsky); his stepsons,
Bryan Abernethy (Maura), Ben Levy (Mindy), and Danny Levy (Alana); his
sister, Sr. Lesley Sacouman; two grandchildren, Tala Minsky and
Ainsley Nemirovsky; and eight step-grandchildren, Yahn, Lennon,
Chelsea, Allison, Justin, Max, Charley, and Charlotte.
Jim will be remembered
as a loving partner, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, as well
as a mentor, scholar, and advocate for justice. His legacy will live
on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Donations can be made
to either of the Valley Hospice Foundation, Fidelis House or the
Canadian Cancer Society in honour of Jim.
A celebration of life
will be held in the spring, a date to be determined. Arrangements have
been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation
Services, Kentville.
