In Loving Memory of Robert “Bob” Blanchard
July 21, 1943 to May 12, 2025
(written by his grandson Quincy Houle)
It is with a heavy heart, that we say goodbye to a wonderful husband, amazing father and an awesome “Gramp” who passed peacefully on May 12, 2025. His legacy of love, laughter and endless road trips will stay with us forever.
He leaves behind his much-loved wife Wanda Blanchard whom he married in June of 1966. He was very proud of his three children: Kim (Gary Swenson), Kevin (Wanda Villemaire) and Natalie (Tim Houle).
He adored his four grandchildren: Sydney, Cameron, Quincy and Riley Houle. His guidance, generosity and his daily presence in our lives shaped who we are and we already miss him dearly.
It is comforting to know that he is now reunited with his parents; the late Maurice Sr. and the late Cecile Blanchard. He also gets to see his late brother Maurice Jr. (Madeleine) and they can talk about the Cornwall Royals and Water Street arena days. I also know that he will take good care of his grandson, the late Nicholas Houle.
He started working as a life insurance agent in 1982. He used to say he was lucky because he loved it so much that it never felt like work. He was supposed to retire in 2004 but he wasn’t ready so in between driving his grandkids to school and sporting events, he kept working with Aunt Kim until he was over 80 years old because he still enjoyed it.
My grandfather was quick-witted and one of the funniest people ever. His jokes would make me laugh. To me, he was more than just a grandfather — he was a best friend and the heart of our family.
What really set him apart was the way he loved my brothers, my sister and I. Whether it was taking us on plane and road trips or simply spending time with us. He liked going to our sports and school events and was interested in our school projects. If we needed something, he showed up right away. If we needed a ride anywhere, he would be in the car and ready to go.
He would say, “I’m just the chauffeur — you guys are the bosses, where should we go?” We would talk about sports, school, current events and anything else we could think of. He loved using Google Maps — he called it the best thing ever — and with it, we felt like we could go anywhere.
Last summer we were going on a weekend trip to Lake Placid and it turned into an extended trip to Lake George, Old Orchard Beach, North Conway, and finally Mont Tremblant. Those were some of the places that he loved going on family vacations with his wife and kids when they were young. We had to keep calling my mom and grandmother to let them know we were off to a new town and that we wouldn’t be coming home for a “few more days”.
He was a great storyteller, a navigator and a sports encyclopedia. Even though he is gone, he will be with us every ride, game, milestone and every map that we google. The road won’t be the same without him — but the memories he made will guide us for the rest of our lives.
My grandfather felt that a funeral would be difficult for my grandmother. Therefore, Honoring Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
Our family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the Community Paramedic Program and the entire staff at the Cornwall Community Hospital for their fantastic care.
My grandfather was a lifelong lacrosse fan. If desired, donations to either Cornwall Celtics Minor Lacrosse cmlaxpayments@gmail.com or Akwesasne Storm Minor Lacrosse akwesasnestormlacrosse@gmail.com or Meals on Wheels Cornwall would be very much appreciated.
Thank you for every mile, Gramp. I love and miss you, and I’ll carry you in my heart.
With love, Quincy
