Richard « Dick » Stacey
1931-2025
Following a period of declining health, Richard Edward
« Dick » Stacey passed away peacefully at the Victoria Glen
Manor on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
You can’t throw a rock in Victoria County without hitting
someone related to (or friends) with Dick Stacey: a consistently
hard-working, occasionally grumpy soul who made an impression on
everyone he encountered.
Dick crammed a lot of life into his short 93 years. An original
Tobiquer: the house he was born into now sits under 30’ of river
water from when they built the dam. He purchased land less than 200
yards from his birthplace and built — by hand — a home and
camp: a little slice of heaven where friends were welcomed, cards were
played, stories were told, and more than a few marriage vows were
made.
Roads and trails — still enjoyed by many today — were built
by Dick during the 60s and 70s, driving the dozer or grader in the
summer heat, daring the blackflies to bite him. And much of his career
was spent turning wrenches on heavy equipment so the ‘S-O-Bs
could break them again.’ He was with Frasers for over 20 years,
but it was his time working with the Watson family that he enjoyed the
most. Dick didn’t stop working until he was in his 80s, and even
then, he kept busy around the house and camp. He was a man who loved
to work, no matter what the job.
There are many folks around the Perth-Andover area who probably
learned their first curse words from Dick … he was eloquent and
imaginative when frustrated with whatever challenge was in front of
him, whether he was getting set playing 45 at a card party or yelling
at a piece of equipment that wouldn’t do what he wanted it to
do. And it wasn’t just his language that was colourful; he was
true blue in his commitment to helping others and getting it done
right; he loved to wear John Deere green, and he was a
dyed-in-the-wool Liberal red.
Dick had two children in his first marriage: daughter Barb (Jason) on
the west coast and son, Wayne, who was tragically lost at an early
age. He remarried and became a stepfather to Sharon (Tammy), Shelly
(Kirk), and Jeff (Hortensia). As well, Dick had brothers,
stepbrothers, and cousins throughout the county and across the
country.
A big thank you to the staff and caregivers at Victoria Glen Manor,
where Dick spent the past four years playing bingo and cards, chatting
on the Alexa with family, cruising the halls in his powered chair,
complaining about the pizza, or tormenting the nurses and earning
their love. The care and attention they gave him, even when he was at
his crankiest, is much appreciated. The love they showed him during
his final week is a testament to the inner beauty of these unsung
heroines and heroes dedicated to caring for their patients.
A special thank you to Lisa Kitchen and her family for the love and
attention they showered on Dick over the past few years. You brought
joy to his life and peace of mind to his family. Thank you for your
patience and grace, and for introducing him to Timmy’s iced
coffee … who knew it would bring him so much joy?
Dick is now with many of his friends and family who were waiting for
him to deal the next hand.
A graveside service will be held this summer.
If you listen closely tonight, you might still hear him say,
“You’re god-damned right.”
Arrangements have been entrusted to Brunswick Funeral Home,
Perth-Andover, NB.
