Obituary of Richard Bourke Tillmann
Richard Bourke Tillmann left us mere mortals on Saturday, March 29, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of intelligence, friendship, and inclusivity. Born in London, Ontario, on November 20, 1960, Richard was the son of Dr. William Anthony (d. 1998) and Anne (Smith) Tillmann (d. 2013). Richard, the youngest of nine, is predeceased by his brother Ged (d. 2024) lovingly cherished by sister-in-law Jane, siblings and spouses Pegi McCrea (Rob), Mary Pat (Gerry Dancyger), Judy Gmeiner (Bart), Catherine, Paula Tillmann Peirce (Richard), Babs Schenck (Lou), and Bill (Gill). He leaves behind countless loved ones, including his 15 adoring nieces and nephews, multitude of cousins, and a vast network of dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Richard pursued higher education at Queen’s University, earning a degree in Economics and Life Sciences. His passion for public service led him to the Ontario Public Service, where he built a distinguished career. He attended the University of Toronto and became a certified mediator, further solidifying his role as a thoughtful and strategic leader. Over the years, Richard played an instrumental role in shaping financial services regulation in Ontario, supporting the removal of barriers for same- couples. As a long-time member of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO), he was a champion for employees, a strategic thinker, and a leader who challenged the status quo. He retired in 2019 after a successful and impactful career, concluding as Senior Manager and Special Advisor to the Superintendent of Financial Services.
Richard could have run a master class on friendship, making everyone feel like a lifelong companion. He had an exceptional ability to focus entirely on those around him, making each person feel valued and heard. His friendships spanned various circles—work, Toronto, Bayfield, family, and beyond—each nurtured with the same dedication and sincerity. Richard never sought to fix people but instead provided space for them to be their authentic selves. His humour, warmth, and unwavering presence made him not just a friend but a confidant to many. As one close to him put it, « Many people have lost their best friend in Richard. »
He was a passionate entertainer, a culinary enthusiast with chef certification from George Brown College and, most importantly, a kind-hearted soul who brought joy and connection to everyone he met. Richard’s beloved family home shared with his sister Catherine in Bayfield, « Longuevue » was more than just a place—it was a reflection of his values, a direction in life, and a pathway to living with intention and generosity.
Richard’s commitment to public service extended beyond his career. He was deeply involved in community initiatives, lending his time and expertise to causes he believed in. He was a dedicated member of the Pioneer Park Association, the Bayfield Area Food Bank, Out of the Cold Toronto, and Bayfield Seniors Diners Club, always ready to support and uplift his community. In his memory, hug your loved ones and consider volunteering.
Richard’s family will be receiving friends on Friday, April 11, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street, London, Ontario. His siblings will lay him to rest privately. If desired donations to Pioneer Park pioneerpark.ca , the Bayfield Area Food Bank www.bafb.ca , Casey House caseyhouse.ca/, or a charity you know Richard would love, are gratefully appreciated
