Richard Bennett Pollock
1933-2025
Richard Bennett Pollock, 92 of The Jordan Lifecare Centre
and formerly of Hopewell Cape passed away unexpectedly on Sunday,
January 26th. 2025. He was born in
Picadily, NB and
was the son of the late Harry and Bessie (Marshall)
Pollock.
The family later moved to
Elgin, NB. In
Richard’s younger years he
became a member of the
Hillside Baptist Church and attended
the Hillside school across
from where he lived. Later he
attended the Elgin School.
Richard was a hard
worker and always kept busy. He was an
instrumental part of the
tapping of the family’s Maple
Sugar woods which
helped provide the needs of his
family. Later
he moved to
Ontario where he worked at a
Water Treatment Plant in
Oshawa, a Brick Company in
Toronto and finally ended up working at the
Ford Motor Plant. While
in Ontario
Richard stayed with his
friends Neil and Marg
Collier. Marg’s sister Joan Steeves
was
there also. As love would have
it Richard
and Joan moved back to New Brunswick and
got married in Moncton.
Back
home Richard worked for a time at the T. Eaton Company in
Moncton. Then an
opportunity arose for a piece of property where they could
build their
dream. When
finished they called it The Hopewell Rocks Motel. They put
their heart and soul into it giving them great
pride. It became
known all over the world as tourists came and stayed with them while
visiting the world’s highest tides and the famous Hopewell
Rocks. Many
additions were added over the years. Their
endeavors became very
important to the entire
community. As their
children, Brian and
Jewel, grew older they too helped their parents develop the
hospitality business and made many happy
memories.
Richard’s family grew and
married and
to their children he
became such a
special Papa.
« You
were a firm foundation through all the storms of life, a sturdy hand
to hold onto in times of stress and strife. A true
friend I could turn to in times of good
and bad, one of
life’s greatest blessings was the best Papa I could
of had!
«
Richard lost his
wife,
Joan, too
early and was
saddened for a
time but time marches on. In 1995
he met and married Sharon A.
Layton, and together they
continued to expand
the business. In the
year 2000 Richard decided to retire and sold
the business to his son Brian and his wife Brenda, of whom
he was so very proud and
confident
in.
Retirement didn’t sit that
well so
Richard and Sharon bought a small motel on Campobello
Island. There they enjoyed the comings and goings that the
hospitality industry brings, but the great distance between both their
families began to weigh
heavy. They sold and moved back home to
Elgin. Richard and Sharon enjoyed traveling
extensively as well as enjoying old and new friends at
home.
Time stands still for
no one and
Richard needed
more care. His final home was the
Jordan Life Care Centre
in The Glades. He will
be deeply
missed by his wife
Sharon of Elgin,
Son Brian and
Brenda of
Elgin, son – in – law
Jeff Wilson
of Quispamsis, his
treasured grandchildren, Kyle Wilson of
Toronto, Christie Pollock of
Riverview and
Richard McCarthy of
Calgary. He will
also be missed by his step-children, Kevin
Killam, Eric Killam and Lois Killam
and their children.
Besides his parents Richard was predeceased by his first wife Joan
(Steeves); his
daughter Jewel Willson; siblings, Hillburn, William (Bill), Annie,
Spurgeon, Eva and
Vera. He was
the last surviving member of his immediate
family.
The
family would like to say a very
special thank you to the Jordan Life Care
Centre for the excellent care given and
kindness shown. It will
never be forgotten.
