It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Richard Arnold Dekker on December 30th, 2024, at home, surrounded by his devoted family. Rich is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Lynn (nee Kanat), daughters, Kimberley (Dave) and Kristyn (Jim), and grandchildren, Michael, Alana, and Nicholas Martignago, Rich and Ethyn Werner, and Mitchell Davies. Rich was predeceased by his younger brother Rusty Dekker in 2006 (Melody d. 2005) and is survived by his older brother Bob Dekker (Janet), many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Rich (or Ricky as he was known to them) is also survived by his Aunt Margeurite Tufts and many cousins from the Tufts family with whom he enjoyed weekly breakfasts and monthly lunches.
Born in Welland in 1945 to parents Bill & Cora Dekker (nee Tufts), the family moved to Niagara Falls in 1957. Rich attended Westlane and A. N. Myer secondary schools. He made many life-long friendships in his fraternity brothers (Gamma Sigma) and excelled in many different sports: soccer, football, track and field, basketball, hockey, and baseball. Over the years Rich played on many high-level teams both locally and around the world. One of his favourite sports memories was of an Oldtimer’s hockey tournament in Innsbruck, Austria where his team played on open-air rinks with the Swiss Alps as their backdrop. His love of sports continued throughout his life until a knee replacement in his 60s slowed him down slightly. Golf became his go-to sport playing in many tournaments all over Ontario and the US. Rich and Lynn were fortunate to spend their winters in Atlantis, Florida over the last 12 years where they both enjoyed golfing and volunteered at the PGA Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens for a number of years.
Rich began working at Bell Canada after high school where he learned the technical and business skills he used to open Peninsula Video and Sound out of the family garage. He worked tirelessly over the next ten years making connections (physically and literally) in the cable TV industry. Thanks to his strong and reliable work ethic, Peninsula Video and Sound grew into PVS Contractors serving the entire Niagara Peninsula, and branched out to Hamilton, Burlington, and Oakville. In 1996 Rich had the foresight to add a Locator Division to PVS and became the main contractor in the Niagara Peninsula for the Call Before You Dig (Ontario One Call) service for locating underground services prior to building. In 2013, Rich sold PVS to Oakville Hydro but was asked to stay on as a consultant for 5 more years before fully retiring in 2017.
Rich’s family extends a special thank you to the compassionate Dr. Rhonda Collins and RN Melanie, and caring palliative care nurses Kayla and Dani for their support and attention in caring for Rich in his final weeks.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Morse and Son Funeral Home, 5917 Main St, Niagara Falls, and cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date (TBA). We hope to see you then to share stories and laughter about Rich’s wonderful sense of humour and how he made all our lives better. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in Rich’s memory, are appreciated by the family. Memories, photos and condolences may be shared at www.morseandson.com
