Reverend Charles (Chuck) Edward Vickerson passed
away peacefully at Toronto General Hospital on June 1st, 2023, at the
age of 81. Sadly missed by his family and many
friends.
Charles was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on
July 29, 1941, to Nellie (Longhurst) and Harry Vickerson. He is
survived by his son William (Billy) Mallette of Brossard, Quebec and
was predeceased by his parents.
His father Harry was a minister, and during
Charles’s childhood, the family moved often. Some of those
years he lived in Pointe Saint Charles, Montreal. At an early age,
Charles learned how to make good friends quickly. That talent
continued throughout his life.
The fondest memories of his childhood were the
summers in Muskoka and Prince Edward Island. His mother was from the
Muskoka area, and he enjoyed visiting family there and spending time
with his cousins. Charles also visited his father’s family
at their cottage near Montague, PEI.
When Charles’s son became a Chef, he
was proud of his son’s achievements in the profession. He
would order books about cooking from the library so he would be better
informed to discuss the food business with his
son.
After graduating from the Religious Studies
Program at McGill University, Charles was ordained in the United
Church and served as a Minister at various Churches in Quebec. Later,
he moved to Toronto to minister and counsel. Charles lived his
Christian faith daily by being a friend to many people and always
ready to listen when needed. If asked for advice, he would offer
thoughtful guidance.
Charles was an avid reader. He had a large
library and ordered books on diverse topics from his local library
every week. He also had a few favourite hobbies: shortwave radio, kite
flying and cycling. He was a keen participant in the Toronto Kite
Fliers club and the Toronto Bike Network.
He loved to fly his kites and had a banner made
with the name of his favourite hymn, « I’ll fly
away ». He wanted that hymn sung at his
interment.
Every week, Charles would ride with his bike
club, sometimes leading the Leisure Wheeler group. He often rode in
the annual Montreal Bike Festival. One year, with some friends, he
rode in New York’s TD Five Borough Bike
Festival.
As he requested, Charles will be buried near his
father and grandfather. They were also
ministers.
Funeral service will be at the interment on
August 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m.
