Obituary of Raymond Herbert Purton
Raymond Herbert Purton, 79, passed away on July 9th in Ottawa, Ontario.
Son of LaVerne Purton (nee Ambrose) and Roderick Herbert Purton, Ray was born January 2, 1946, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After living and receiving his elementary education in Manitoba and Quebec, Ray entered high school in Ottawa, Ontario, as a puny 12 ½ year old. While there, he cunningly won the “protection” of the young toughs by photographing their muscle cars and girlfriends.
After surviving high school, and trying his hand as an elementary school teacher, Ray attended Mackinac College in Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. His time at Mackinac, surrounded by peers from around the world, was transformative. He looked forward to attending the college reunions held regularly and valued the friendships he made there that lasted more than 50 years. He was always happy to reminisce and share stories. Like the time he and his classmates borrowed cafeteria trays and used them as sleds one winter night, or the time he and a friend skated right off the ice into the Straits of Michigan – always a good talker, he couldn’t talk his way out of that one but managed to clamber his way back onto the ice nonetheless.
Early in his married life, he and his wife Brenda explored Central and South America before travelling to New Zealand to work. It did not take much prompting to get Ray to retell the story of how one night when sleeping on a beach in Costa Rica he woke up covered in crabs, or how, when he worked construction in New Zealand, his coworkers installed his bicycle in a tree to put the uppity Canuck in his place.
A man of many talents, Ray used his skills in plumbing, electrical, and construction to help his father and brother build a family cottage, which three generations of Purtons still enjoy. Later, those same skills were put to use when he oversaw the construction of a home for his family and an addition to the Waldorf school his daughters attended. Always willing to lend a helping hand, Ray was just a phone call away for those who were in need of his expert assistance.
An active champion of the many international students his family hosted over the years, Ray regularly tried to make them feel welcome by confidently engaging them in conversation in their home language, convinced he could do so competently and even going so far as to occasionally offer corrections to their grammar.
Ray was predeceased by his father, mother, step-mother, and aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife Brenda St. Jean and their children Fiona Laverne Purton, Leith Emera Purton, and Alice Elizabeth Annie Johnstone; son-in-law Shane Johnstone; grandsons Ethan Godoy and Andrew Godoy; siblings Dennis Purton (Linda Purton) and Judy Wasson (Rick Wasson), step-siblings Clint Hierlihy (Carolyn Barnett) and Christina Hierlihy; brother-in-law Michael St. Jean, and several cousins, many nieces and nephews and their children.
An Anthroposophist and long-standing member of The Christian Community, Ray was a helper, a storyteller, an eager conversationalist, and a loving husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He will be remembered with great fondness for his mischievous grin, his love for his family, movies, and breakfasts, and his belief that pancakes should be eaten on weekdays.
