Obituary of Raymond Fraser MacDonald
The family of Raymond MacDonald, sadly announces that he passed away quietly in his sleep on April 28, 2025, at The Veterans Health Unit in Fredericton, NB. He was born on October 10, 1930, to Allister and Alice MacDonald, in New Glasgow, NS. He was the middle of 3 children, with older sister, Jean, and younger brother, Chester. They lived in River John, Pictou, Amherst moving with his father’s career in the RCMP.
Raymond joined the military at the young age of 20 in 1950 and served in Korea with the 1RCR, for the last 14 months of the war. He left the Military once he came home and started a career as a Mason. He decided to join the military again in 1954 and served in the Black Watch unit, then to 2RCR. He was well known for his hockey playing in the Black Watch and Base Teams where he established some lifelong friendships. For his Military service he received the Queens Diamond Jubilee medal, as well as, the 1988 Noble Peace Prize for Peacekeepers, due his Cypress tours.Raymond retired from the Military in 1980 and went to work with CE at Base Gagetown, for another 10 years utilizing his skills as a Mason to end his career.
On August 26, 1953, Raymond married Isabel Boudreau, whom he met in his teens. They went on to have 3 children, Tom, Doug, and Lynda. Isabel followed Raymond to Kentville, NS, London ON, Germany, and then Oromocto. During most of these postings she was able to continue her nursing career, retiring with the VON.
Raymond not only enjoyed playing hockey but also Coaching both hockey and baseball. His family has heard many say that he was a Coach that they still enjoyed playing for.
His favorite place to visit was Seafoam, NS. He was heard many times saying that he had been around the world and no place was better. He loved to fish from the green dory and assist his live long friends, Henry and Emma and family, with their farming.
Raymond will be sadly missed by his wife of more than 71 years, Isabel MacDonald (Boudreau); his children: Tom MacDonald (Elona), Doug MacDonald (Allyson), and Lynda MacNeil (Frank); his grandchildren: Stephanie MacNeil (Tom), Catherine MacNeil (Kirsten), Charla Young (Jamie), Monica MacDonald (Nathan), Scott MacDonald, Alec Ingalls (Victoria), Tristan Farnham (Karli); great grandchildren: Clara Ingalls and Arywyn Young. He will also be greatly missed by his nephew, David MacDonald, who spent a lot of time with our family. Raymond was predeceased by his siblings, Jean Cameron and Chester MacDonald.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Veterans Health Unit for the excellent care he received in the past year. All the staff were kind, thoughtful, and professional and we noticed how much they made him smile.
