Obituary for
Ralph Maxwell
MAXWELL, Ralph Harry – Age 93, Truro, passed away in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro on January 10, 2025. Ralph was born in Edmonton, Alberta, the son of the late James and Edna (nee Paisley) Maxwell, and stepson of Mabel (nee Winfield) Maxwell. He grew up in a large immediate family with two brothers and six sisters.
Ralph was proud to serve his country as an RCMP officer and retired in 1976 as Staff Sergeant after 25 years in the force. His career in the RCMP was spent at various detachments in Western Canada, most recently in Edmonton, Regina, and Winnipeg. A move to Nova Scotia followed, where he continued to work in other fields around the Truro area including a stint with the Commissionaires and a period as a counsellor for troubled youth. He also drove for a courier company and helped his brother-in-law build houses.
Retirement was no time for idleness. Always good with his hands, Ralph loved to putter in his work room and was able to fix most anything he set his mind to. He enjoyed woodworking, curling, and music. When allowed in the kitchen, he liked to bake, and the stereo was always on. A man of faith, he was a long-time member of Immanuel Baptist Church before switching to St. James Presbyterian. He sang in various choirs, the St. James Male Chorus, and as a soloist over the years. He loved to sit down at the piano and self-taught himself to play by ear. He enjoyed his granddaughters immensely and was always quick to lend a helping hand. Baffled by some of their fashion choices, he loved to tease and watch them grow into the lovely young women they are today.
Ralph met his wife, Shirley (nee Brenton) in the town of Manning in northern Alberta. He worked out of the RCMP detachment, and she was a young nurse from Nova Scotia. The day they got married, Shirley had to walk thirteen planks placed over the mud, in her bridal gown, to enter the church. After their marriage, they moved to Edmonton where they started their lives together and welcomed two daughters. When Shirley passed away in 2005, they had been married for 45 years. Instead of dwelling on his loneliness, Ralph found new passions. He found friendship and companionship in Doris Tedford. With her by his side, he became an avid golfer, enjoyed bowling, and made new friends in the condo building he moved to. He loved to join the Tuesday morning coffee crew from St. James, and he continued to be in touch with other RCMP veterans in the area.
Ralph is loved dearly and will be greatly missed by his daughters, Dawn (Daniel) and Susanne; granddaughters, Jessica (Garion), Alisha, and Amanda, as well as his companion, Doris Tedford and her daughter, Lynn. He is survived by two sisters, Noel Edmunds and Beryl Goodwin and sister-in-law, Barbara Maxwell (nee Worth), as well as many nieces and nephews. He was also richly blessed by good friends who have been a constant source of support and inspiration.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. James Presbyterian Church or the Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation towards the IMCU or Palliative Care units.
A visitation will be held Friday, January 17, 2025, from 4 to 6 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS.
