Your Legacy is every life you touch – Maya Angelou
Philip Macaulay a.k.a. Ford model Phil a.k.a. Marlboro man, passed away very peacefully Friday, Jan 3rd.
Phil, or « Canada », as he was lovingly called in his spirit home Idaho, left us in awe of having known such a beautifully pure soul. While he was on this earth, Phil had this gift of turning heads and hearts. Whenever he walked into a room his presence would simply make it bigger.
His dedication to his family and the people who mattered to him defined his charming integrity in which he always stood
He could be one of the top international models dancing with Mick Jagger at a private party as effortlessly as he was able to have a Stella with a stranger at Apples, after which he would have a new friend.
Phil was sincerely interested in who you were.
He genuinely loved this world and his place in it.
He said his only regret was that he always took too much time making unavoidable decisions in fear of hurting anyone and therefore losing time he wished he had toward the end of his life.
But Phil also knew that he had filled his own heart and all of ours to the fullest in his time.
In sharing his fear of what’s to come, he also recognized his ability to gently, in « Phil fashion », leave the room quietly and surrender with gratitude and in peace.
The man who was chased by every woman, seemed to always be the loneliest man.
Until Heather.
He said that life had brought him the most loving angel to help him make his last perfect turn.
His angel, protecting him with grace, humility, courage and strength.
Phil was loved by so many of us!
Let’s carry forward his torch of kindness through this time left to all of us…
(Recollections of a long time and very dear friend of Phil’s, Doro)
As per Phil’s wishes there will be 2 Celebrations of Life.
One in the winter in Idaho, and one in the spring on Georgian Bay close to our home.
Details will be shared on Facebook and via email as soon as they’re available.
Please pray for his family who have now lost 2 sons to ALS. His brother Mike passed Nov 2023. Father Don, sisters Mary-Ellen, Jan, and Maureen, and their children and grand-children, as well as Mike’s partner Christine.
Thank you to the many friends who travelled to Thornbury to visit Phil over the summer and into the fall, as well as those sending beautiful messages. He felt all the love and support so very deeply.
Phil chose Recordati di me by Venditti as the song to play as we did our farewell at hospice….it brought tears to his eyes every time
Please enjoy it in his memory…..the man with the beautiful blue eyes that you can feel walk out in front of him.
We will remember you forever Phil, with so much love
Heather
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to either of these causes in Phil’s memory.

The next tribute was submitted by Phil’s Concordia Friends & Teammates:
It is with deep regret and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Phil Macaulay on January 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with ALS. Phil was a remarkable man who left an indelible mark on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.
A proud member of the Concordia Stingers football team from 1979 to 1982, Phil embodied grit, camaraderie, and determination both on and off the field. Beyond his years at Concordia, Phil embarked on an extraordinary journey that took him across the globe.
In 1989, Phil launched his modelling career and quickly became one of the top male fashion models of his era. Representing the prestigious Ford Modelling Agency, he appeared in countless magazines, commercials, and billboards for renowned clients. His career took him to some of the world’s most iconic cities, including New York, Milan, Paris, London, Munich, Hamburg, Tokyo, Zurich, Montreal, and Toronto. Along the way, Phil forged lasting friendships across the globe, leaving an unforgettable impression with his magnetic presence in every city he visited.
Phil’s adventurous spirit extended far beyond his career. An avid cyclist, swimmer, and triathlete, he was rarely far from the great outdoors. Whether biking through stunning landscapes or taking to the slopes as a ski instructor at Sun Valley in Idaho, Phil lived with passion and purpose. For five years, he dedicated his time and expertise to coaching skiing for the Canadian Special Olympics, a testament to his generous and compassionate nature.
Despite his international adventures, Phil never forgot his roots. He remained deeply loyal to his friends from high school, university, and beyond, nurturing relationships that spanned decades. His ability to connect with people and make them feel valued was one of his greatest gifts.
Phil is survived by his loving wife, Heather Macaulay; his father, Don Macaulay; and his sisters, Mary Ellen, Janet and Maureen. He is predeceased by his brother, Michael, and his mother Mary. He was also “Uncle and honorary uncle to many”.
Phil’s legacy of kindness, perseverance, and adventure will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was a beloved teammate, friend, husband, brother, and son who enriched countless lives with his warmth and generosity.
Rest in peace, Phil. You will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all.
