Peter MacIntosh Obituary
After 91 years the universe decided to take back one of its’ Stars! Peter died peacefully at his home in Shawville, on Saturday evening, May 17, 2025. It was just another day like many others, with his son present when the fateful moment came. God took him quickly and for that we are grateful. He is predeceased by his father Norman, his mother Catherine (nee Nicholson) and his 10 siblings; Betty, Norman, Johnny, Jerry, Croc, Gerty, Vonny, Grace, Joe and Mary. He is survived by his sons Ben (Teresa), Ken (Barb) and Greg and daughter Allana (Celine), along with nephews and a niece, including Samuel and Ana Rosa (Greg) and Connor and Jordan (Ken). Dad was the youngest boy and proudly earned the honour of living the longest (91), while also luckily being able to maintain the ‘gift of the gab’ and his sense of humor, right to the end. Dad began his journey in the small hamlet of Little Bras d’Or, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. He was a proud Caper and loved visiting that region as often as he could. He grew up close to Mill Pond where he and many other boys learned to love hockey and spent hours trying to perfect their skill. When they weren’t playing hockey they were cheering on their favorite team “les Habitantes” ….Friday nights and “Hockey Night in Canada” was a popular pastime. He left the ponds for a chance at bigger and better pursuits and managed to land a spot on the North Sydney Junior Franklins, a team that in 2019 was inducted into the Cape Breton Sports hall of fame. Peter attended St F X U in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where he earned a spot on the Varsity Hockey Team, making a big impact in the two years he was there, before earning his degree in Civil Engineering (TUNS-Halifax) alongside one of his key companions and brother, Norman. While pursuing his education he met and married Mary Napier, a big-city (Halifax) girl, and shortly after moved to the Pontiac (via Montreal) in 1968 with four kids in tow. Although the East (family) and the ocean was near and dear to him, his love of the Pontiac and in later years his need to clean things up (Sewage and Septic, hee hee) kept him coming back. Although his marriage ended in 1985, Peter and Mary maintained a strong bond throughout their lives. Dad was very involved with the Shawville community and developed some lasting personal and work relationships, including Mary Allen and the whole Allen clan, serving as President of the Curling Club, Shawville Minor Hockey in various capacities over many years and the many relationships he developed through his engineering work. He was so grateful for all of these genuine connections and spoke often about them. Dad/Pop could be found roaming around the Pontiac for work and pleasure, such as a round of golf at Norway Bay, a jump in the lake, camping, canoeing. He actually never retired and earned his last paycheck in Feb 2025. Work was a social outlet that he loved. He did get to travel though, often visiting his kids in various locations across the country (Calgary, Thunder Bay, Ottawa, Montreal), or down east at his childhood home watching boats pass by on the “gut “- the nickname of St Andrews Channel, adjacent to the Cape Breton dwelling.
Pop,
You rarely lost your temper and you seldom complained …you were an old dog that didn’t mind learning new tricks. We loved you and will continue to love you for all these reasons ….you are so missed and it’s hard to believe we are not going to see you anymore… …But …we will see you …feel your presence …we will remember you when singin’ a tune (O Danny boy!), havin’ a drink (room temp beer – ideal! hee hee), takin a little ride!
