Not many CBCers have had a career so varied, both professionally and geographically as my friend Peter from small town Ontario..
I first met him many years ago at a conference somewhere in this vast country. In 1983, after he became regional director of radio and I executive producer in Halifax, we worked together until he went to learn the ropes as a television producer in the news department on Bell Road.
He convinced me to come and work for him again when he was producing late night TV news and developing Saturday Edition, which became the most successful of the regional Saturday news hours until someone far away pulled the plug. With Paul Barr as the on-camera storyteller, he also produced a series of features focused on the outdoors which turned into a great hit on Halifax’s First Edition and regional syndication.
Not always well understood, Peter was a fierce proponent of independent news and current affairs, and gave us plenty of room to “commit journalism” as we used to say. He also experienced more than his share of tragedy during our time together in the ‘80’s.
At our marriage in 1995, Peter presented my wife and me with two of his signature walking sticks. He was a great outdoors guy, wandering the woods with his dogs looking for the perfect saplings to bring back to his basement workshop/studio where he turned them into canes of various kinds. These were virtually works of art which were in great demand all over North America.
For someone in such a high visibility role and industry, he was actually a rather shy man whose sometimes gruff exterior hid a perceptive and artistic soul.
I will miss him and offer our condolences on your behalf to his wife Pat and son Brendan. There will be a memorial for Peter at Barnard’s Funeral Home in Bedford on January 19 from 2 until 4. (Details below)
Here are some of the highlights of Peter’s life and career:
Peter Allistair Loucks
He was born on Oct. 19, 1941, in Bowmanville, Ont., though his family lived in the notorious village of Leskard until he escaped to university at Carleton in 1960.
That’s where Peter studied journalism and met his future wife, Pat. They were married in 1963.
In 1966 he was hired by CBC as a reporter in Toronto, where their son Noel (now deceased) was born, and the CBC journey began. And it was a country-wide journey, first to Ottawa as a reporter on Parliament Hill, where his son Brendan was born and he covered two federal elections before accompanying Pierre Trudeau on assignment to Russia in 1971.
The family moved to Calgary in 1972 where Peter turned into a radio producer for the morning show as well as reporting on the Calgary International Horse Show.
Vancouver was next, in 1977, still as a radio producer, and then Thunder Bay where he was station manager for Northwestern Ontario. That’s where he met Arthur Black and the germ of an idea for what became the long-running network show Basic Black came to fruition.
But before that program hit the airwaves, Peter and his family moved to Halifax, his final move, to become regional director radio in 1982, a television producer in 1988, and a retiree in1995.
A lot of people will remember Peter’s passion for Springer spaniels and the field sport he pursued with them. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and cross-country skiing. This continued in retirement, along with volunteer teaching of English as a second language to new immigrants, and of course his woodworking.
Sadly, Peter was diagnosed with dementia in 2022. His family cared for him at home until two months ago when he entered Moody Hall long term care home in Bedford. He suffered a stroke on Dec. 27 and passed away peacefully at the QE 2 hospital Dec 30.
