Pencie Granchelli Obituary
It is with great sadness that we the family of Pencie Granchelli, announce the death of our sister, aunt and friend to many on Monday December 30, 2024.at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, NS
Born on December 18, 1932 in Sydney Mines to the late Joseph and Ida (Lundrigan) Granchelli. She lived her entire life on Atlantic Street. Sydney Mines.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers Joseph in infancy, William (Elsie), nephew Billy, and nieces Linda and Janine.
She is survived by her brother Rev. Gordon (Georgina), Sydney; nephew Kristopher (Jennifer), Middle Sackville, NS and their children Olivia and Nicolas; nieces Angela (Dan) Eastern Passage, NS and Cara (Amy), Sydney and her children Caitlyn, Emma, Makayla and George; niece Ria Granchelli (Robbie and Alex), Ron Goodwin (Jason, Trevor and Maureen).
Upon graduating from High School, she attended Normal (Teachers) College, Truro and began her teaching career in 1951, George’s River and retired in 1993 as Principal of Archibald and Barrington Schools. In her later years of teaching she organized several student trips to Ottawa by train which proved to be very popular.
Pencie was a force of nature, with a heart and spirit larger than life. A constant volunteer for community organizations including Palliative Care (providing over 5000 hours), Hospice Care and Christmas Cheer (Salvation Army).
For her many hours of volunteerism, she was awarded the Governor General Medal, Queens Jubilee Medal, plaques from United Way, Town of Sydney Mines, Sydney Mines Police Department .and School Board. In addition she also served on the Board of the Cape Breton Healthcare Complex and helped many, many individuals who were in need of care.
Pencie was a Lifelong Member of Trinity Anglican Church and was the vibrant force behind the Memorial Building Fund which repaired the church steeple, Casavant Pipe Organ and renovated basement into Grandy Hall, Whatever the church needed she tirelessly worked hard with all parishioners to make it happen. She was also a long servicing member of the church choir.
She loved to curl and golf – was a member of Cape Breton Curling Club/Seaview Curling Club and life member of Seaview Golf Club. Besides curling and golf she loved to watch all sports – hockey, baseball, soccer, etc -. on TV as well as Game Shows – and was an avid reader.
Our thanks to all her friends who continued to visit and call her over the past years while at home, in hospital and at Harbourstone – she cherished each visit and call. Our thanks to staff at Northside General Hospital for their special care and to Dr. A. Wawer for taking care of her for many years.
A special thank you to all staff of Levatte Lane, Kenwood Hall for their compassion and care especially in her final days.
Cremation has taken place according to her wishes, and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Anglican Church, Queen St., Sydney Mines. Prior to the service, you will have an opportunity to pay your respects to the family in the church from ( 10 am-11 am). Interment with family only will take place at a later time.
