Obituary of Paul Edwin Lawrence Munro
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Munro on May 3rd, 2025. He was a beloved husband, father, papa, educator, and friend.
Paul was the son of the late Harold E. Munro and Mary Evelyn Munro, as well as a cherished brother to the late Mary Eleanor Munro. A lifelong resident of Fredericton, Paul was proud to have successfully changed careers three times without ever leaving the city he loved.
He began his professional life in education, teaching at Fredericton High School, with earlier teaching roles in Sus and McAdam. Later, he served as a science consultant for the Province of New Brunswick before retiring from the University of New Brunswick, where he held the position of Assistant Dean of Science. Paul earned a B.Sc., B.Ed., and M.Sc. from UNB, specializing in chemistry. A proud member of the New Brunswick Teachers’ Association (NBTA), he also served on the board of directors of the NBTA Credit Union for several years.
Paul was an avid outdoorsman with a lifelong passion for salmon fishing. He was also a talented and meticulous craftsman – tying flies, building furniture, and even constructing the family’s first home on Deerwood Drive with his own hands. His creativity and dedication were evident in his contributions to building sets for FHS musicals and the beautifully crafted jewelry in his retirement.
A generous and compassionate community member, Paul was an active volunteer with local soup kitchens, Wilmot United Church, and several organizations he deeply supported. These organizations included the Parkinson’s Support Group and the Epsilon Y Service Club, which was a testament to his Scouting background. He served as a dedicated leader and instilled the values of service, responsibility, and respect in the youth he mentored.
After retirement, Paul found great joy in traveling with his devoted wife, Carolyn, volunteering in the community, and tending to the garden at their beloved cottage. He remained deeply committed to education, particularly in mentoring and supporting science educators. His legacy as an exemplary teacher and tireless advocate for science will be remembered by many.
In his later years, Paul bravely faced the challenges of Parkinson’s disease. He was deeply grateful for the incredible Deep Brain Surgery team in Halifax, whose work gave him a renewed lease on life. He was proud to be known as the “Miracle Man Walking,” a title affectionately given to him in a Daily Gleaner article that captured his courage and perseverance. Taking great joy in participating in exercise classes, surrounded by compassionate individuals who supported him in maintaining his strength, mobility, and spirit.
He was immensely proud of his children, Scott Munro (Christine Baillie) and Marcia Dysart (Jonathan), whose accomplishments brought him endless pride and joy. Even more, he adored his grandchildren, Jonah, Lauren, and Anna Dysart, as well as Clark, Hugh, and Lydia Munro. They all knew him as their loving and proud “Papa.”
He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering generosity of spirit.
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery on June 1st, 2025, from 2 – 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations in Paul’s memory may be made to Parkinson Canada.
