Obituary of Patricia B. O’Driscoll
It is with great sadness and unbounded love that we announce the death of Patricia Mary Burns O’Driscoll. Pat passed away peacefully in the Sunshine Centre at Luther Village in Waterloo, Ontario, on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
Pat was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Francis O’Driscoll, who passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, after sixty-six years of marriage. She is the mother of five children: Teresa (and Bob Minty), Kenneth (predeceased, and Darline Besselt), Daniel (and Marj O’Driscoll), Carolyn (predeceased), and Michael (and Cecily Devereux). Pat is the grandmother of eleven wonderful adults (Alana, Wesley, Janelle, Michelle, Bryanne, Ben, Jazz, Casey, Lauren, Dylan, and Bryn), and great grandmother of thirteen precious children (Jackson, Cooper, Sebastian, Cameron, Charli, Hannah, Jackson, Vaughan, Patrick, Madeleine, Leona, Collette, and Kazimir).
Pat was born on May 14, 1933, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to John and Carolyn Burns. In 1950, at the age of seventeen, Pat moved to the big city to pursue her dream of being an artist, taking up residence in Brooklyn, New York to attend the Art Education program at Pratt Institute.
There, she met her future husband Ken at a student mixer—he famously spotted her in the crowd in a pair of brilliant red shoes—and by 1953, they were engaged. Pat graduated from Pratt in 1954, and after marrying Ken in the same year, the pair travelled to Denver, Colorado, where Ken was stationed as a laboratory scientist in the U.S. Army. Pat took up her chosen profession as an art teacher before giving birth to her first child in 1955 and went on to love and raise her five children as the family moved on to Princeton, Broomall, and Buffalo before finally settling in Waterloo.
Pat and Ken travelled the world, with extended stays in Japan, Germany, Sweden, and Australia, as well as a half-year trip sailing through the Great Lakes and down the Intracoastal Waterway to Florida. They were avid sailors, and their succession of ever-growing sailboats were docked at Wiarton Marina, a launch point for life-long friendships, glorious daytrips, and extended stays in the North Channel of Lake Huron. A cottage on the Bruce Peninsula was the site of family gatherings over the decades, including a wonderful celebration of their 50th anniversary in 2004.
Pat’s prolific artistic work in watercolour and mixed media reflects her travel experiences and especially the images she captured on the Bruce Peninsula and in the North Channel. Pat produced hundreds of beautiful paintings, exhibiting and selling her works with the Bruce Peninsula Society of Artists, the Button Factory, the K-W Society of Artists, the Waterloo Community Arts Centre, and in the Luther Village Waterfall Gallery. Pat believed that there were stories to be told and experiences to be shared in painting, and she sought to express that through the mood, colour, and light captured in her landscapes and still life portraits.
Pat was active in the community, advocating for women’s rights with the Status of Women, supporting children with learning disabilities, and after her own children were grown, taking on the position of Volunteer Coordinator with the Rockway Senior Citizens Centre. At Luther Village, she was active on the resident’s council and provided artistic instruction to other residents. Indeed, she was always both passionate and generous in her creative work, and for the last years of her life, she passed that creativity on to her great-grandchildren through regular online sessions in which she returned to her origins as a skilled art teacher.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Patricia’s life will be held at a later date. A private family interment will take place at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo.
Condolences for the family and donations to the Refugee Health Centre at Community Healthcaring Kitchener Waterloo or the Canadian Cancer Society may be arranged at www.erbgood.com
