P. Murray Berry – 88, Truro, passed away peacefully
on Monday, February 17, 2025 at The Mira Long Term Care Centre, Truro.
Born in Chapple Township, Ontario, he was a son of the late Percy and
Gladys (Staples) Berry.
Murray is survived by his loving wife of nearly 69 years,
Jean (Allen); sons, Daniel (Jennifer), Waterloo, Ontario; Dale (Jean),
Las Vegas, Nevada; Donald (Melissa), Niceville, Florida; eight
grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; sister, Beverly (Jim)
Bartuccio, British Columbia; several nieces and nephews. Along with
his parents, he was predeceased by seven siblings.
As Murray grew up in the mountains of southern British
Columbia, he developed the lifelong attributes he would model and then
foster in his family. Young Murray was an active lad, always on the
move, be it hunting, fishing, raising and selling chickens, or just
enjoying his eight siblings, but where he shone was in the world of
sport, especially skiing, diving and gymnastics. Still better were his
accomplishments in athletics, notably the sprints and jumps.
Regardless of the activity, Murray took to heart that if you are going
to commit to something, make sure you do it to your very best which
lead to him being more than good, he was accomplished!
At 18 Murray made a life choice that changed everything. He
decided to decline an athletic scholarship to a US school, and headed
across country to St John’s, Quebec to join the Air Force.
Thus began a 38 year career, enlisting as AC2 and through hard
dedicated work retiring as Chief Warrant Officer. His first of 18
military moves was to training in Clinton, Ontario. It was here that
Murray considered himself the luckiest man as he was the only one on
the track team fast enough to chase the top female sprinter, a young
Nova Scotia lass from Joggins. Needless to say Murray always said that
of all his awards, Jean was the best trophy he ever
won!
Family was everything with Murray modelling to his three sons
that there is no such word as can’t. As they were stationed
across 4 provinces, Europe and Bermuda, Murray stressed each move was
not a challenge but was an opportunity to find joy in travel, new
adventures, experiences, cultures, people, and opportunities. Murray
instilled in family that home is where hearts meet, not a postal code.
A mainstay for every move was the family’s love of sport. As
the boys grew Murray dedicated his time to leading and developing
programs for the boys and the community. It did not matter what was
required, Murray understood all roles are critical and he was there to
guide and support as driver, coach, organizer, convener and proud
parent in the stands. His insight and experience were integral to all
three boys eventually performing and winning at Provincial, National
and International levels. And once the boys had children, you could be
sure every visit found him in the stands, proudly supporting sons and
grandchildren who follow in his footsteps.
Upon retirement Murray experienced joy in redefining how he
spent time. Settling in Truro found Murray in his garden, renovating
the house, or in the workshop working on projects for himself and
others. He also appreciated the many new friendships he was blessed
with through golfing, curling, skating, square dancing and
travelling.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Murray’s
family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m., Thursday, February 27,
2025. Spring interment will be held in Lower Onslow Clarke Cemetery,
McKinley Road, Lower Onslow. If so desired, donations in
Murray’s memory to Brunswick Street United Church are
welcomed. Tributes, words of comfort and memories may be shared at:
