Obituary
Left with many wonderful memories of a strong and independent woman and devoted mother and grandmother are children Leone (Patrick Walsh), Kerry, Lisa, Norah (Dave McKeown), Peter (Kimberly), Susan (Dan Filtz) and Michael (Cheryl), grandchildren Christopher, Stephanie, Patrick Jr., Emily, Brody, Gary, Riley, Chloe, Ryan, Megan, Paige and Mya and one precious great grandson Gordon, sisters Ursula (John) Blankenship, Ida (Bud) Carlson and brother Malachi (Linda), as well as innumerable family and friends, especially Gert Corrigan and Ruby and Gil Hiscock. She also provided a loving home to over 50 children who could not be cared for by their own families.
Predeceased by husband Leo Kelly (1958) and husband Peter Duggan (1979), parents Peter and Winnifred (Hearn) Power, and siblings Mary Hanlon, Joseph, Maurice, Bridget, Marion, Theresa, Francis, Raymond, Anita Stasiuk and Agatha Daugherty.
One could be forgiven for thinking that a person who reaches the age of 92 has been lucky to have an easy life. But Mom experienced many challenges, trauma, and tragedies that she faced with determination and resilience. She spoke of the two years she lived in the sanatorium fighting tuberculosis and of losing her first husband Leo to brain cancer when their daughter Leone was only four days old. She was then struck with the tragic death of Peter, leaving her with seven children to raise on her own. She was not afraid of hard work. She trained as a bookkeeper, taught countless people to drive, drove the ambulance for several years (never did get used to not being able to speed off with the lights flashing!), gave her time and energy to the St. Joseph’s Community Council, the Placentia-St. Mary’s School Board and School Tax Authority. She grew almost everything we ate growing up, raised chickens, ducks, cattle, and sheep and knew every good berry picking and trouting spot within driving distance. We spent many wonderful days having picnics and boil-ups while we filled our buckets with berries or helped limb out the trees she cut to heat our home. Two summers in a row, she packed up the car and pop-up camper and drove us to memorable vacations across the Atlantic provinces and into Quebec. Despite her deep love of her home in St. Joseph’s, she made the decision to move her family to St. John’s to avail of the educational opportunities there. She quickly made a home there and involved herself in school activities and driving kids in every direction, cheering us on at every activity, as well as joyfully transitioning to the role of Grandmom. Her happiest days were spent with her grandchildren, especially going “out home” to walk in the woods, catch a few trout or pick some berries. She avidly collected bone china tea cups and spent many happy hours in her flower garden. She was still cutting her own Christmas tree into her 80’s. We are left with a lifetime of cherished memories and funny stories to share.
Many thanks to the staff of One West, Chancellor Park for the love and care you have shown Mom in the last few years of her life. She was so content under your care.
Mom loved flowers but donations to the Lung Association of Newfoundland, her favourite charity, are also appreciated.
