Nina Alma
Bower
February 12,
1922 – February 4, 2025
With hearts
full of love and gratitude, we announce the transition of our beloved
matriarch, Nina Alma Bower, who peacefully and beautifully left this
world on February 4, 2025, at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital
in Antigonish. She was surrounded by family, spiritual songs, and
prayers, departing just eight days shy of her 103rd
birthday.
Nina was a
woman of extraordinary strength, grace, and unwavering faith. Born on
February 12, 1922, in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of
the late Maurice and Elizabeth (Littlewood) Acker. Her childhood home
in Churchover, was steps from the ocean—which became her
playground. And even into her 90s, she could be found swimming, often
with her grandchildren in tow.
From an early
age, she was the rock of her family, the one her parents and seven
siblings relied upon. She prioritized her health, beginning and ending
each day with 500 jump rope skips and core exercises. For over 20
years, she preferred to park her car and walk to and from work. Her
independent spirit was evident in everything she did. At just 14 years
old, she became one of the first people in Canada to undergo thyroid
surgery, a testament to her resilience.
Nina was
fiercely independent, strong, and capable. After her husband’s
passing, she lived alone in her home for over 20 years, maintaining an
active and disciplined lifestyle well into her 100th year. She cooked,
cleaned, gardened, and even shoveled her own walkway, embodying
resilience in every aspect of life. At 100, she moved in with her
youngest daughter Pamela, who lovingly cared for her until her
peaceful transition.
Nina built a
remarkable career, serving as Personnel Manager and Secretary to the
Administrator at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital for over 20
years. She was deeply respected by her colleagues and known for her
sharp intellect, mastery of the English language, and unwavering
integrity. A woman of many talents, she was an avid gardener who
cultivated the largest vegetable and flower garden in her community.
But her love for flowers extended far beyond her own
garden—no bloom went unnoticed by Nina. She paused road
trips to gather pussy willows, and if she spotted forget-me-nots in a
field, her face would light up with joy. She always had fresh-cut
wildflowers and garden blooms on her kitchen table, a daily reminder
of the beauty she cherished. Peonies were among her favourites, and
wherever she traveled, she carried a deep appreciation for the
delicate wonder of nature’s floral
gifts.
Just as she
nurtured her garden, she cared for the birds that visited her home,
delighting in feeding them—especially hummingbirds, whose
vibrant presence always brought her joy.
A woman of
deep but quiet faith, Nina firmly believed in Christ as the Messiah
and lived a life that honoured God. She was slow to anger, quick to
listen, and full of encouragement. She welcomed everyone with warmth
and kindness, fostering genuine friendships throughout her life,
including on her cherished travels to Jamaica.
Family was
her greatest joy. She was central to her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren’s lives, often packing up her car and
camping trailer to take them on unforgettable camping trips throughout
the province, PEI, hiking trails, and beaches. She loved listening to
Elvis Presley, Daniel O’Donnell, Bob Marley, and the simple
pleasure of making memories outdoors.
Her kitchen
was the heart of many gatherings, where she prepared family favourites
like gumdrop cake, ice chest pudding, hodgepodge, peanut butter balls,
meatballs and rice, and pickled beets. A dedicated community advocate,
Nina served on the board of the Naomi Society, passionately working to
support women and families.
She is
lovingly remembered by her children: Donna Mahaney (late Mont),
Shelburne, NS, Patrick Bower (Anne), Vancouver Island, BC and Pamela
Bower, Ohio, NS. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of 15
grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 10
great-great-grandchildren.
She is
reunited in eternal peace with her husband, Robert, her adored sons,
Lloyd and Terrance, and all seven of her
siblings.
Cremation has
taken place, and a Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on
Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 11:30 AM at Lochaber Community
Center.
In lieu of
flowers, donations in Nina’s memory may be made to the Naomi
Society.
Nina’s life was a testament to love, faith,
and resilience. She lived by the words she often said: « Do unto
others, kind and true, as you would have others do to you. »
(Matthew 7:12)
