Obituary for Nelson John Nassau Kennedy
March 3, 1945 – January 21, 2025
With hearts full of gratitude and love, we sadly announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Nelson Kennedy at sunrise on January 21, 2025.
Nelson was born on March 3, 1945, in Montreal and was adopted by his loving mother, Audrey Elizabeth Kennedy, before they both moved to Vancouver.
Nelson received his early education in Catholic schools across Vancouver and Edmonton, ultimately graduating from Vancouver College in the Class of 1963. Vancouver College became a second home to Nelson, where he formed cherished lifelong friendships. His bond with his VC brothers remained strong throughout his life, sharing memories, mentorship, and camaraderie that stood the test of time.
Nelson built both his family and career in Edmonton. Pioneering a program known as Inhalation Technology, Nelson played a crucial role in the development of what is now known as Respiratory Therapy. Nelson was recognized with numerous honours and awards for his dedication and commitment to advancing CPR programs and training. In recognition of his pioneering work in Respiratory Therapy, an annual award and conference were established in his name, ensuring his contributions continue to inspire future professionals. As both a teacher and administrator at NAIT, he made a lasting impact on countless students, colleagues, and professionals.
Nelson had a deep passion for life. He loved his family, his pets, his cars, his scotch, and the joy of entertaining—whether hosting after-work drinks on the deck overlooking the river valley or indulging in lavish meals in the formal dining room. He also appreciated music, fine shoes, British television, and his Edmonton River Valley home. Above all else, he adored his wife, May, and his children: Patrick Kennedy (Amanda), Anne Hagel (Clay), Kate Kennedy (Pierre), and Dale Hennessey (Alex).
He was immensely proud of his five loving grandchildren: Sam and Lena Hagel, Noah and Sydney Lefebvre, and Brogan Pilgaard-Kennedy.
Fifteen years ago, Nelson and May migrated to Vancouver, where they embraced a new chapter of their lives. They also spent cherished years on Salt Spring Island, living in a home reminiscent of their beloved Edmonton residence. The breathtaking views provided a perfect backdrop for hosting guests, sharing laughter, and creating cherished memories.
Despite facing health challenges and orthopedic injuries in his later years, Nelson remained active, often exploring Stanley Park on his motorized scooter with May walking beside him. He delighted in engaging with fellow park-goers and tourists, always eager to share a smile and volunteer as an impromptu photographer. Nelson and May also found great peace and joy in Stanley Park, spending countless hours reading at the Rose Garden, capturing photos, and witnessing outdoor weddings at the Pavilion.
Nelson’s kindness, humor, and unwavering love for his family and community will be deeply missed but forever cherished.
A formal Catholic mass will be held at St. Mark’s Church (5935 Iona Dr, Vancouver) on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 3:00 PM, with a casual reception from 4:00 to 5:00 PM directly adjacent to the Church. A celebration of life will also be scheduled for both Vancouver and Edmonton in early summer. In lieu of flowers, please kindly donate to the St. Paul’s Palliative Care Unit in Vancouver.
